A Dent in the Maybach Landaulet: The Malts’ 2000 Dalmore 13 Old Single Cask, Cask Single Malt Scotch

I’m not a big fan of The Dalmore with their pricing of E150-laced, chill-filtered, low shamelessly over-hyped whiskies. met and spoken with Richard – quite a personality, both a and a scholar, and unquestionably one of the most blenders alive – and I do like, but like paying the price the Castle Leod, the Mackenzie and the III.

On the other hand, I’m sure there isn’t a of whiskies out there that is as stunningly good as the line of cask bottlings from The Malts, which are un-colored, cask strength and, what you get for your money, priced. I’ve liked Exclusive Malts dram drunk and a few of them are among my whiskies of all time.

So, this should be interesting…

Fun 1: “Alexander Matheson, who founded in 1839, was a partner in the famous Far trading company, Jardine established by the ‘shogun’ Willam who made a vast fortune out of opium from China” MacLean, Whyskypedia, page We can assume, therefore, that was founded by folks with a and abiding concern for the pleasures of fellow men.

Fun Fact 2: is not, like the names of Scottish distilleries, derived a Gaelic place name, or phrase; rather, the word is meaning ‘big meadowland’.

The under review here is, as above, non-chill-filtered, untainted by drawn from a single and bottled at cask strength. The ABV is percent. Its color is hay or straw and its slightly oily consistency for rather quick but alluring running down the sides of the

The nose on this spreads a big soft blanket over all the concha at once. It’s eating – with your – a banana-butterscotch sundae (whipped cream, but no maraschino cherry) in a where the kitchen had a fire the night before. Immediately, as as the colors on a color chart, you get camp fire, butterscotch, and cream. A truly luscious Go in a bit deeper and you get some caramel, blossom, dense, clean and salted nuts – salted So far, this nose is like a royal flush. – why does there always to be a However? – there is something not right. I believe I know it is, but, at first, I doubt I smell my fingers, wash my and think back over the week’s meals to be sure aroma isn’t coming something on or in or around me . Nope, it me or my surroundings – and it isn’t powerful or in any way, not a deal-breaker in the least, but I I smell – shallots. Mild It’s not ruinous to the nose of fine whisky, but it is just, prominent enough to be palpably out of As you’ll see, this confirmed further into savoring session, so the score suffer a bit. However, add a wee bit of and it is much diminished, with oak and a sugar cookie aroma to the fore. (20/25)

Powerful, pungent, slightly the doused camp fire is here in favor of the butterscotch and almonds. The old smoke is there but on the palate it is more complimentary. is a strong, delightful suggestion of cream wafer cookies. I at first think is an odd, absence of fruit turns out to be a handful of dates with one dried cherry, all surely but underlying the sweeter and more aspects. There’s a bit of almond at cask strength, but add a bit of water and you get the distinct taste of the Bit-O-Honey bar. Farther down in the profile, less prominent than in the nose, taking the of a very slight bitterness, shallots again. It doesn’t anything – it just doesn’t (21/25)

Here, finally, even the innuendo of shallots – diced, or otherwise – has been banished. In this is a long, warm, softly spicy finish – a finish that leaves you an almond candy wave The spice is of the warming kind, of an allspice or rich mix of clove a little cinnamon and maybe a slight trace of ginger. makes it all a bit milder, but equally to swallow. Yum. (23/25)

If that slight of ‘shallotry’ in the nose and palate a bothersome frequency I could with some exacting equalizer, this whisky score in the low- to mid-90s. a very distinct smoke to the richness and complex sweetness of of the Dalmore juice is brilliant – and a telling look back at the of Dalmores from many past. And the move of the almond from salted nut to almond to almond candy going nose to palate to finish, – well, that’s a beautiful I wish I had another sample of one, a bottle of my own or a generous with an open bottle so I spend more time it, just to be sure. If and when happens – and I’m sure it will – write a little addendum to review. (22/25)
