You know Stalley as the bearded Music Group emcee, the guy who has two well-received mixtapes ( Lincoln Way and Savage Journey to the American ) and is gearing up for his debut album. you may not know is the that the guy can talk probably play) hoops the best of them.

Having high school basketball in his of Massilon, Ohio, and briefly in at the University of Michigan and Long University (LIU), Stalley has a for hoops that never diminished, as he transitioned to a career in music. the NBA season getting off to such a start, we spoke with the about whether the Lakers are what in the world the Thunder do without James Harden, and his for his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. The Brooklyn resident also us the scoop on his upcoming debut

STACK: All right Stalley. to put your NBA analyst hat on. The Lakers are Everyone in L.A. has the panic turned up to 11. Is this just an bump in the road, or do the Lakers some serious problems out in La-La-Land?

Stalley:  They’re going to struggle. I’m not a fan. my personal feelings aside, I think [the Lakers] are to live up to the hype. We all want a to talk about. Dwight is a little overrated to me. Some will argue with me that, but he is. He can’t make throws, we all know that. He into foul trouble. Of they’re going to go to the Playoffs and a run, but I don’t see them to the Finals. I still don’t see beating OKC or the Spurs.

Kobe and Steve Nash are up there in age. An injury steer this ship off course.

Right. And that was my argument in the beginning, when happened and the trades went First of all, they’re We all know that. Kobe is Kobe. He’s going to do he’s going to do. You can’t him. But Nash can’t nobody. He’s not staying in of Tony Parker, he’s not in front of Russell Westbrook. He even stay in front of Lillard, you know? Who’s he to guard? You’ve got Dwight getting into foul not making free throws, and to me, Gasol is soft. They’ll be all but I don’t think that going to make it to the Finals. might make it to the Conference I think it might be the Spurs and the or OKC and the Heat again.

The Thunder to be your second-favorite team the Cavs. Kevin Durant is man. What did you think the James Harden trade down?

I didn’t realize how big of a [Harden] was until [the opening loss to the Spurs]. We all Russell Westbrook can be somewhat of a at times. It just showed how [Harden] kept the team, how in he kept the team and how important it was the stretch for Westbrook to be off the ball. just more calm. He the team gelling and kept in position. He could drive, he also dish and I think down the stretch, it’s for Westbrook to be off the ball, because I at times, he does a little bit

When they first the trade], I was thrown off like else. I didn’t think it was going to hurt, because Martin is good. I like Lamb. I really didn’t it was going to be that much of a because I thought Kevin he’s a shooter, he helps the point. I don’t think his is as good as Harden’s. I just they can still keep it It’s the beginning of the season. I that in time they’ll be back on track.

I thought if anybody was going to go, it was going to be Ibaka. I remember talking to about that. We were about it a couple months and I was like, I feel like if leaves, it’s going to be because he’s a big man. A lot of need big men. I felt he deserves a check too. I like he was going to go get it. But I thought were going to keep at those three and let whoever go. Kind of like the Heat or have that core that they try to make is taken care of, and then else they try to put pieces So I was very surprised to see Harden go.

Harden comes out with and drops 35 and 47 points in his first two

That was disgusting. And it was of like a big “Ha!” in everybody’s I’m happy for him and I’m excited for him. got a bright future. He’s to help Houston out a lot. Him and Lin, they’re going to do a job down there.

You’re living out there in now. What’s it like for the to finally have an NBA team?

very exciting. I came when I was at LIU, which is down the street from the and I actually live right the street from both now. Whenever I was in school, I was Man, if I stay in New York or I get a condo or a brownstone or something, I to be in this area of Brooklyn. I was to get money and have a nice right downtown and then built the arena, and I’m like, is perfect. The city is thriving. really energized waiting for the to come. Brooklyn gets everything, as we know, whether an artist or someone that’s here, they really behind it. They’ve got so much here. It’s kind of Ohio and how we are with the Browns and the No matter what the teams we still have so much and we’re selling out the games day, every night. if the teams are 0 and whatever. Brooklyn has same type of feel.

I’m for [the Brooklyn Nets]. been telling everybody before the season, I think going to be better than the They might be a good 4th or 5th I still see the Knicks being around where they at last year, that 8th spot. They can’t healthy. But I like the Nets They’re kind of young but you know? I really like Joe I’m a fan even though he gives me of that Vince Carter, Ray feel sometimes, where I like those dudes got heart like that. don’t have that to lead a team by themselves. But being with Deron I think that’s going to I really like [Brook] I think if he stays healthy, a good player. Marshon off the bench is good. They’ve got good pieces.

What are your thoughts on hometown Cavaliers? Are they making their way back to

Hopefully they can squeeze in in that 8 th spot. I absolutely [Tyler] Zeller. I think going to be a special player. outside shot and down he’s a good all-around big He plays defense too. Waiters surprised me, because I was mad the Cavs picked him. I thought there were so others, like Jeremy even Thomas Robinson. were just a lot of good that I felt like could have grabbed him, and I didn’t really see they seen in him. But he played, he came out and balled. He had an shot, he played some He passed the ball well. He be a good piece. The backcourt strong. I think they’re on the right track to rebuild. still missing some We still need a four. need a three. But I do like Varejao and I do like Zeller low. I think those work hard. We’re a team, we all know that, so going to work hard and going to grind. It’s a few more pieces away, but I they got a chance if they playing like they’ve playing and maybe find a somewhere in between the trading and now to help them get in the playoffs.

Seems like you’ve got friends all around the NBA. Who are the ballers you’ve met?

a lot of the guys dig my music and come I did a show in Sacramento, and DeMarcus and Thomas Robinson came Kevin Durant, he’s a of mine. He’s everything when it comes to his personality and how he is as a and a man. He’s a great great spirited, genuine Amar’e Stoudamire is also who was at one of my shows and I built a relationship Real good dude. good friends with Taj I was just speaking with him the day because he just renewed his contract. I was him on that. Quincy Miller, a good dude. I met him actually day, but he came out, he love, he said that he was a I actually had a little after-party in and he came through just to out with us at the after-party. Also Chandler, he’s a real guy too over there. Lou Williams is a dude down in Atlanta. He was in for awhile. I’ve met Kyrie briefly. I don’t really a relationship with him, but I did get to him. Those guys I mentioned are real close and guys that I talk to or when I see them we catch up.

OK, you can go back to being a rapper You’ve had two extremely successful Now comes the debut album MMG. That’s a big moment for What’s it going to be like?

I’m so Using an analogy or a metaphor for it’s definitely like drafted and coming out that year just wanting to be the of the year. I think that’s I’m working towards with the that I’ve been on thus far. I’m about through with the debut and everybody I’ve played it to, the label and [Rick] Ross and and family of mine, one word they use is it’s beautiful. beautiful music. That’s I’m trying to do. I’m trying to make that gives good Like Bob Marley said, one about music, when it you, you feel no pain. The that I’ve been on, just my life in general, is having good vibes and off good energy to people. people through whatever it is, whether it’s anger, pain, I just want to be the for that. I’m just looking to showing the world the talent and the world how we do in Massilon and in Ohio. another big part of music for me, to give that small that Midwestern story. We get the glamour and the glitz of music hip-hop, but we never get that story or that story comes from being a All-American type of vibe. what’s coming with the

STACK: Thanks Stalley. We to see you courtside at a Cavs game
