Eat a few hunks of  bread and a – soft lettuce, mustardy a few walnut bits to get your salivating for the main event: a with fries and the house (a closely guarded and near-legendary recipe), and then wait for the touch.

There is only one main here, and it is served to hordes of every day; yes, are places to get better steak in but nowhere does it with an intensely French spectacle. waitresses provide clockwork crammed-in tables ensure a atmosphere; the mirrors, light and banquettes create a creditable of a Parisian brasserie. Örn Garssarsson’s visionary Iceland theatre troupe Vesturport has bigger, flashier and more work than ‘Metamorphosis’, returns to the Lyric its third run premiering here in 2006. But never made anything as as this brilliant, overtly take on Kafka’s 1915 about a clerk who wakes up one to discover that he has, turned into a grotesque insect.

Except here, he hasn’t: in nothing more terrifying a rumpled suit, the rather Garssarsson plays the hapless as a bewildered everyman who can’t why everyone now finds him so horrific. he clambers athletically about his with a vaguely scuttling But with the contents of his room – chair, window, furniture – at a 90 degree angle, Gregor is ‘walking’ along the floor: it is his hostile family who are actually at the angle.

Börkur Jonsson’s skew-whiff set remains stunning, Nick and Warren Ellis’s score is gorgeous, and there are superb all round, most notably the Garssarsson and Nína Dögg as Gregor’s sister Greta, who the real metamorphosis – from music-loving schoolgirl to brutally authoritarian.

Adapted by Garssarsson and Farr, this ‘Metamosphosis’ is a about the fate of the Jews in Europe, as the hard-working Gregor’s spit nonsensical abuse at him fawning over Jonathan creepy proto-Nazi Herr Once you’ve acclimatised to the visuals, the odd moment does But the last half-hour is devastating – as the of Kafka’s novella approaches, hard to see this being as the definitive stage version.
