New Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz A200.

It might an odd thing to say of the world’s oldest but this is new ground for Mercedes-Benz .

Not the company hasn’t built compact hatchbacks before, but the models to use the A-Class tag missed targets by a fair bit.

And though it had its moments as a hatchback, early A-Classes never did manage to feel or drive a proper Mercedes-Benz should.

Not does it need to appeal to a buyer, it must also to a potential Benz buyer. those two agendas and you can see why this is new

But the A-Class has the job in hand right the start, purely because it terrific. The proportions are still of a five-door hatchback but the upright of the previous model is gone.

The is neat and classy (although plenty of plastic on the dashboard) and the and switches are all generic Benz in this case, is no bad thing.

The seats look very and inviting even in the standard of our test cars. Speaking of this time we’ve the entry-level Mercedes-Benz A180 and the tipped to be the volume seller, the A200.

Both versions to sit you pretty low (although there’s adjustment) and the head-rest that back towards your is good for whiplash protection, but irritate somebody with a big “do” (or a hat).

There’s also a sense the seat/pedal/wheel relationship isn’t spot on with the brake in particular, feeling as though too close to you.

The more A200 gets a much leather tiller and leather as well as classier dials that the A180’s are low-rent).

The seat is a bit tight for bigger although the sculpted backing of the seats helps, but there’s no around the fact that the space is not only smaller some, it’s also through a pretty small

Power for the $35,600 (plus and dealer costs) A180 from a1.6-litre four-cylinder a turbocharger and 90kW of power and of torque.

The $ 40,900 A200, also reflects the global of engines with the same 1.6 but more turbo-boost for 125kW and

The A180 rides on 17-inch while the A200 gets items. For all that, there’s not a lot of in ride quality because the tyres that both use the ride quality, rather the tyres’ diameter or sidewall

These run-flats are definitely than previous generations lots more grip, but still very noisy and can the odd jolt through the seats.

The suspension, too, while great balance and feel can generate its own noise, mainly a now and then from the rear crossing squared-edged bumps.

The engine definitely has more on display, but the base-model is not exactly and both seem capable of 8.5 litres per 100km in urban with a sympathetic driver.

a little exhaust boom finds its way inside at particular speeds, but the four-cylinder is smooth and for the most part.

The biggest issue involves the transmission.

Not the seven-speed clutchless manual is a harsh shifter, rather both the A180 and the A200 slow to lift their form a standstill.

You could argue that is a long-term Benz trait – and it is – but the of a long-travel throttle pedal and the step-off of the gearbox means either A-Class can feel a bit in traffic.

The brawnier engine in the Mercedes-Benz A250 Sport – at until the flagship Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG in — masks this but that car is a $49,900 proposition.

The meanwhile, is to stamp on the gas hard as the light turns green; a that will be familiar to buyers, but might not sit so well Benz buyers. Again, a profile that really represent new ground.
