Other hatchbacks feel posher

Short boot and acess to the seats isn’t great

Competitive, if not exactly

What’s it like to drive?

are three petrol engines and diesels. The 168bhp 2.1 diesel in the is particularly good: it pulls from just 1500rpm so it relaxed and refined, even at speeds. The 154bhp 1.6 petrol in the is pretty smooth, too, but it rather vocal on the motorway. You can hear some wind down the sides of the car at motorway but it’s not that bad.

The standard ‘comfort’ suspension give you as smooth a ride as you get in hatchbacks. There’s the odd thunk bumps and the ride never settles, even on the smallest available. Go for one of the lowered, stiffened AMG models, and the ride becomes bone-shaking on all but the smoothest surfaces. a huge pity, then, the superb A220 diesel will be available only in AMG format.

All versions have steering precise and well weighted, but the isn’t as enjoyable on a twisty as other hatchbacks.

What’s it inside?

There’s plenty of and steering wheel adjustment, so drivers should be able to get Head- and legroom is on a par with but access to the rear isn’t as as in a Golf, for example.

The dashboard looks swish but the climate controls feel lightweight and most of the lower-down are hard, so the cabin isn’t as as an Audi A3’s.

You operate functions by scrolling through with a single control unfortunately, these menus especially well laid so the system can be distracting to use on the move.

The is shorter than most and it isn’t especially deep, but at there’s some extra space beneath the floor.

Standard equipment includes wheels, Bluetooth and air-conditioning.

How is it?

The A-Class is too new to have featured in the JD Power customer satisfaction but other Mercedes owners reported that mechanical is above average.

Every comes with Attention (which monitors driver and a radar-controlled collision-prevention system, the options list includes a range of other compelling technology. Not surprisingly, the A-Class the maximum five-star rating in tests by Euro NCAP, 93% for adult protection and 81% for child Deadlocks and an engine immobiliser guard against theft.

Should I buy one?

The A-Class is competitively next to rivals as the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. The manual diesel SE is definitely worth if you want to keep costs it claims an impressive 74.3mpg just 98g/km of CO2, means no road tax and a lowly car tax rate. All models should good residuals. It’s a shame that you can’t our favourite engine with the suspension set-up.
