Test Driven: Mercedes C180 Blue Efficiancy (7.5/10)

Mercedes C180 Efficiency Estate

My family and I had Mercedes C180 Estate for two during our recent trip to Here in America we have the C class, but we do not have the wagon nor the C180 model, so it was cool to try a bit different. I have driven a few generation C classes over the however this was my first with the current generation, and car was fitted with many of newer gizmos and gadgets. So all in all C180 offered many new for me as an American driver, including in Germany for the first time.

The thing I noticed about the car was it was a Blue Efficiency model, not to be with Bluetec which is diesel line. Blue models have various that improve fuel and emissions such as direct lighter wheels and other as well as stop-start technology, others. The C180 also has a 1.8L four banger a turbocharger, a change from the on the previous generation. All of this to make the C180 Blue cleaner, and more economical, to the level of a similar standard During our trip I measured an of 28mpg at the fuel pump converting all of the metric measures), but in mind that this very mixed driving included everything from autobahn cruising to stop and go traffic.

In America the C class is the smallest sedan offered, but in Europe have the A class and B class it. Because roads are much over there the C class did not nearly as small on the road as the I have driven in the States, and other Mercedes cars on the the C class is very much in the of the pack. The C180 itself is the level model for the C class in and it was interesting to see one in rather basic specification. The seats were in leather (probably leatherette) mesh/cloth inserts, and were not power adjustable. The materials high quality throughout the though, with nice trim and high quality throughout. The seats were very comfortable and supportive, as to be in any Mercedes. Even though it is the model Benz, I would say it meets or exceeds the quality of top models from Ford, etc. So, despite this a far more bare bones than any of the C classes we see in America, it is a quality Mercedes product

The fact that the car was a wagon made things more during the trip. There was enough room for our three and our backpacks in the trunk so the back was not as cluttered as it would have with a sedan. It is beyond me why dont like wagons the package they offer is by far the practical. You get the space of an SUV/crossover, but you the fuel economy and good of a car (much less likely to over, and more able to accidents). Many people about the looks of a wagon, but our was as sleek and sharp as any modern with a beautiful swooping that defines the whole if anything I prefer it to the sedan.

On the the C180 has the low slung, solid typical in all Mercedes cars. The quality is superb, with a minor thunk over and dips. Driving position is great and the steering wheel is adjustable. The ride is very overall, something expected of Benz.

The start-stop feature takes a time to get used to, especially if you are not with how it works. It is meant to gas by turning off the engine when the car is at a light for a decent amount of but I found that it would cut out at stop signs when I meant to stop for a second. The turns back on, when you the brake pedal, in a fashion isn’t completely smooth but not worthy of any real complaint. is a button to turn stop-start off on the and we usually went without the I found it to be useable at stoplights and sitting in heavy traffic, but it can be a nuisance. This is especially so trying to turn onto a with lots of traffic on an incline; stop-start takes the away completely when you need it. It is a good idea, but I it would be better if you had to push the to activate it when u want it already having it on when you the car.

Germany has a variety of roads, of the best in the world. I was able to try the out on everything from unrestricted to winding alpine roads, as as in cities and towns, so I feel equipped to really judge the abilities in the real world. Power the 1.8L turbo makes and 182ft/lbs of torque, which seem like a lot in a car like and it isn’t when you really put the down. However it does a wide powerband thanks to its so it makes the most of what it I would say it has some decent mid pull in 2nd and 3rd gear, enough to and merge without any trouble. It overpowered and it isn’t underpowered, and for who would buy a base model C it is just perfect. I was able to hit the speed limiter at 130mph on some unrestricted autobahn little trouble, and we routinely around 100mph (160kph) on of our road trips.  So, it is capable of more than speed for the average buyer in the world.

On the winding roads of the the chassis is very tight and through corners. It handles enough to have fun, and its power is good for quick between corners. The automatic works, but is pretty sluggish to in manual mode. Hitting the button also doesn’t do too much to liven up the shifting or holding, but it is a noticeable improvement economy mode. The steering is my gripe though, while it is to respond there is no sensation coming through it. This me guessing how much to steer a corner and constantly having to myself. So, while it offers ability on a winding road for the who would buy it, it is not a pleasant surprise for an like a BMW 3 series is.

As the base model C class, the is fantastic. It offers everything you from a Mercedes in build and quality, and it seems to have the optimal mix between fuel and useable power for most world buyers thanks to its engine. Would this car in the US market? Yes it would. Most I know with C classes AMG) know nothing cars, and would probably be with a C180 than C300 because it gets way fuel mileage. It would be to bring the C180 to the US at this though because Mercedes is giving us the C250. It has basically the package as the C180, just 201hp from the same 1.8L instead of 154hp. having liked the C180 a I can happily recommend the C250 to in the US. It is by far the best package for the average C class buyer. Now if only we have the wagon model
