First look: The Mercedes-Benz Electric Drive tries to be normal

No pressure or anything, but as prepares to ship its B-Class Drive cars to dealers summer, it’s got a lot to prove. vehicles (EVs) still a fringe element, composed of cars that are small, and underpowered. Geeks and environmentalists may EVs and their particular challenges. but not so much.

The B-Class Electric is Mercedes-Benz’s attempt to meet EV and regular, everyday drivers closer to the middle. It’s to look and act a lot like a normal It even has a thing that like a key that you put into looks like an ignition (I looked in vain for the power that starts many The battery’s tucked discreetly the floor between the front and seats. The B-Class is a low-key, EV.

I had just an hour to take the Electric Drive on a scenic from Palo Alto to through business areas, roads, and freeways. I got into the car its range was about 100 miles, as reports had indicated, but the final handed to me later pegged it at 85 miles. Mercedes-Benz is surely to manage expectations, but I was hoping for especially since Tesla the powertrain and battery for this Obviously your mileage vary depending upon how you

As you watch the speedometer on the left, the meter on the tells you whether you’re your battery efficiently.

How I drove, admittedly, taxed the pretty hard. I love the torque of electric powertrains and demonstrate it to anyone intrepid to get into an EV with me. In the case of the it accelerated adequately in its default mode. I didn’t try the sporty which would only encouraged my inner speed (and it drains the battery faster). The instrument cluster has a meter showing how efficiently using the battery—that’s how I knew I

The charging requirements are reasonable. The Electric Drive’s 11kW can be charged fully in about 3.5 using a Level 2 charging Also, it can charge to about 60 range in about 2 hours, and more than most drive in a day.

The B-Class Electric Drive 4 or 5 adults, plus there’s a rear storage section. EVs seem exceedingly plasticky (to save weight), but the B-Class has seats, a dashboard with a display (not a touchscreen—Mercedes-Benz keen on them), and a nicely cabin. You can’t expect to over potholes as you would a higher-end Mercedes-Benz, but the ride was even on the more rustic of the drive.

You feel like Mercedes-Benz much inside. The seats are and the design seems tasteful than plasticky.

Now let’s talk competition. i3 is due at dealer showrooms around the time as the B-Class Electric Both cars are expensive by electric-vehicle standards: The BMW i3 will $41,350, and the B-Class Electric $41,450. Along with the Toyota RAV4 EV they comprise the midrange price/feature for EVs, with the Tesla S atop them all at nearly to start.

Apparently, a lot of EV drivers are too and rich to worry much the price. However, these models should offer than lower-end options—from cars like the Smart drive (made by Mercedes-Benz and at $12,490) to the popular Nissan (starting at $35,020). Everyone like longer battery of course, but better driving would also help. The models tend to be so virtuous, barely tolerable to drive.

I tried the i3 at the Consumer Electronics in January. It definitely has some a range up to 110 miles. But its unusual could turn off some and the the B-Class is bigger.

Now that BMW and are entering the EV market, it’s that the category has arrived. models span a wide in both features and price. has a chance to set a standard in balancing EV with some of the brand’s pampering. I wish the range longer, though. Watch space for a full review of the Electric Drive’s many technologies.
