2014 Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG S First Review

What’s Hot: thrust, wonderful steering, brakes

What’s Not: expensive than its competitors

For luxury, speed and engagement it’s difficult to look the E 63 AMG S

Vehicle Style: High large luxury sedan

430kW/800Nm 5.5 turbo petrol / 7sp twin-clutch auto

Price: (plus on-roads)

Fuel claimed: 10.0 l/100km

the local arm of Mercedes-Benz began the specs of the updated E-Class they had a problem.

Their two AMG the E 63 AMG and E 63 AMG ‘with Performance Pack’, ‘only’ muster power of 386kW and 410kW respectively.

numbers, while bone-crushing in any company, were not considered to really take on the might and of the latest crop of large performance cars like the BMW M5. RS6 and even the HSV GTS .

But then came replacement, the E 63 AMG S. With huge of 430kW and 800Nm, it was problem

Although all-wheel-drive in Europe, RWD would have to do. But no matter; local sales figures that not having AWD is not necessarily a mark.

Making the E 63 AMG S the only E 63 in Australia also helps the range; with the majority of E 63 optioning their car up to a higher than that of the base it also made sense for the S to the default.

So what does the E 63 AMG S to offer us? A lot.

A hell of a

The E 63 AMG S might be brutish the bonnet, but it’s incredibly everywhere else.

Cabin is superb. The active seats are but adjustable enough for a wide of body types, and when put in mode they inflate bolsters to help keep you in

Turning hard right? The side bolster will up instantly. It’s an eerie but it adds greatly to the experience.

more AMG-specific features, of Things like the black the alcantara-clad and flat-bottomed steering silver seatbelts and of course the E centre console shifter and of buttons for the AMG Drive Unit

Refreshingly, the default trim is dark polished wood than the typical strips of fibre.

And there’s no shortage of Seat heaters, seat rear sunshade, auto-park dual-panel sunroof they’re all

Added to that list are LED headlamps and tail lamps, radar-assisted cruise control, a camera system, navigation, climate control and a digital tuner — as well as the luxuries like keyless and ignition, USB inputs, sat nav and the like.

What an engine.

The 5.5 litre AMG V8 has been in the E 63 since 2011, but in E 63 S it’s something else.

of power and 800Nm are numbers command the deepest respect, and if you treat this powertrain caution, it will bite

We found that out during the E local launch in regional where the state’s fickle conspired to put as much rain in our as possible.

While this made for a test of the stabilty control’s it limited the opportunities for full-throttle

Use a smidge too much throttle on exit and the back would out before being caught by the safety net.

Even the front wheels were straight, the rear tyres be easily overwhelmed. This is a motor, and we can now appreciate why Mercedes this engine with drive in markets other Australia.

But when the road was soggy, oh what an experience it was to the accelerator.

Response is near-instant. 5.5 litres of displacement means lag is almost completely banished, and of forced-induction torque pushes the E 63 AMG at a dizzying rate.

On a dry road and the E 63 AMG S’ launch control this big German will to 100km/h in a dizzying 4.1 seconds.

is at 6500rpm, but you’d rarely to access it. There’s simply an amount of torque from upwards, and that renders big unnecessary.

At 110km/h in seventh gear, the barely brushes 1900rpm. Now relaxed.

The seven speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission flips with lightning speed, on a few occasions it paused on the 1-2 gearchange in manual mode.

In Sport+ it’s perfect when hard, ably predicting the of the driver and sensing when deceleration necessitated a downshift. In mode, it’s as comfortable and as any hydraulic slushbox.

The chassis adjustable suspension, which can be through three settings soft, medium and hard.

In any it’s wonderfully compliant yet controlled, but for our money we found the mode to be the sweetest out on Victoria’s

Roll suppression is excellent, and the E steering is one of the best we’ve in a performance sedan.

On-centre is excellent, but not overly sharp. builds progressively the further you the wheel too, and it’s a to steer the big E 63 through a corner.

On some of the narrower roads on the route it felt like we trying to thread a whale the eye of a needle, but the E 63’s rock-solid and reassuring steering authority confidence.

The brakes are another and given the E 63 AMG S tips the scales at when empty, they get a workout.

But they’re fantastic There’s zero slack in the pedal, but it’s not grabby the top of its travel at all. There’s a linear progression in braking the further you push it, and it results in a amount of decelerative force if you sink it into the carpet.

offers a carbon-composite brake for the E 63 AMG, but considering how powerful the steel system is we doubt would ever need

a machine. There’s no shortage of execu-cruisers these days BMW M5 , Audi RS6. HSV GTS ), but the E 63 AMG must stand above them

It has the most torque, the finest feel and a universally-appealing interior. You pay for the Benz, but in our opinion it’s worth it.

Its weight makes it a bit of a blunt and the lack of AWD is an obvious handicap in the wet just as it is for the M5 and GTS.

But the way in which it surges ahead and eats up the is. thoroughly addictive.

If you want a buy a C 63 AMG. If you want the biggest, wrecking ball, the E 63 AMG S is the ride for
