Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Sensible shoes for the well-heeled

The Mercedes-Benz E350 Wagon is no-nonsense family hauler. The wagon is all about sensibility and The outside may scream We have louder than a minivan, but the comforts inside are just the for a harried day of hauling the kids.

If, me, you value stain resistance styling — and if, unlike me, you can it — this is the car to buy. base, $57,735 as tested, EPA economy 18 MPG city/26 MPG highway.

Glance: Frumpy outside, inside

The E350 wagon a lot better in 2005. It hasn’t much for 2006, but the competition has specifically Audi’s A6 Avant. you seen this car? gorgeous — not just gorgeous, but gorgeous gorgeous. as if Audi designed the wagon and then converted it to a sedan, and not the way around, as is clearly the case the E350. Can’t blame — that’s the way things are done — but if you’re for a sexy wagon, the E350 it. It’s certainly not ugly; actually quite sleek and It even looks good in one of my least-favorite car colors. (The Silver paint is a $690 so it’d better look It’s just a bit frumpy.

The E may not be sexy on the outside, but it possesses beauty — and I mean literally. The E350’s leather-lined and interior is one of my favorites. Look and you won’t find a harsh anywhere. Everything flows. strangely placid — sitting inside the Benz me.

Being a Mercedes, the E-Class is with safety equipment, antilock brakes, electronic control, and airbags all around. even more relaxing.

Some of the controls are just plain Take the power seat They’re mounted on the door easy to see and use, and they’re in the of a seat. To adjust the seatback, you on the little plastic seatback. It get much simpler.

If only the controls were so easy. The system has way too many buttons, with cryptic labels as SAT, TEL and SERV. (Remember radios had just two dials? were the days. )

Next to the system’s color display is the for the optional built-in phone. It easy to use, but I couldn’t say for — my car didn’t have a installed, just a keypad to the car’s future owner he or she didn’t buy one. The dual-zone controls use simple dials for but up-down buttons for the fan — at full blast, is only quieter than a 747.

The E’s cargo bay is as versatile as a Army knife, with of nets, tie-downs, and blinds. My had a power tailgate, optional at A backwards-facing third-row-seat, sized for kids, is concealed in the floor. my youngest, thought it was comfortable and the novelty of looking out the rear

On the Road: Plenty of power and maneuverability

The E350 wagon heavy, solid and stable. not particularly thrilling to drive, but one the feeling that Mercedes mean for it to be. It drives the way a family car to drive. The 3.5 liter V6 (a new larger from which the E350 its name) puts out 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of It pulls like a small V8. EPA economy estimates are 18 MPG city, 26 MPG I averaged around 20 MPG.

The E-Wagon’s handling is safe and but it#146;s the maneuverability that’s amazing. The turning circle is tight for a car so big. I spent of time — more, than I should admit amusing myself by pulling on narrow neighborhood streets. to self: Get a hobby.)

The E’s is excellent: One-finger-light at parking but nice and heavy on the open Combine the steering with sightlines and the relaxing interior, and you a car that eases the stress of driving.

One thing I couldn’t get used to was the brake-by-wire system, uses an electronic connection pedal and wheels. Try as I might, I not bring the E to a smooth stop. the record, my wife Robin it, and she could. Be still, my ever-shrinking

Journey’s End: Not perfect, but buy one

There are things I’d like to see I’d like to see a touch-screen for the system. I’d like it if you fold down the wider of the split-fold rear seat by (you can fold the narrow or the whole thing). And I#146;d a quick start guide was actually quick. (The E two lengthy quick-start guides and an 500 page owner’s manual.)

And love to see the 3.2 liter turbodiesel employed in the E320CDI sedan. in the E wagon, where its superior would be great for hauling loads. The all-new 2007 E-Class will be here soon, and perhaps some of my will be answered.

My adopted town of Los Angeles is crawling new E350s (more sedans wagons), and I can now understand why the car is so popular. its comfortable and relaxing to drive or in. Outside its got big-city maneuverability and an badge on the hood. And matronly it is, the E350 wagon is equipped to relocate a small town. If I had large to spend on family the E-class wagon might be my choice.
