Mercedes-Benz E-Class

At long last, you get what you pay for

The E-Class has always been a of luxury, safety and image, but models were short on compared to rivals from Lexus, etc. All that has for 2007. The E-Class isn’t new, but it has been substantially new V8 engine, choice of same-price or Sport versions, and many details that make it a better value for your dollar. Price: E350 $50,550; E550 sedan E350 all-wheel-drive wagon,

First Glance: Styling outside and in

The most noticeable to the E-Class are on the outside. The front and grille (link goes to now protrude in a pointy Cadillac-like and the openings near the air dam are larger. changes in front-end trim Luxury and Sport versions, as do (17 alloys for the Luxury, 18s for the Sport).

The taillights now have a large center section housing the flasher and backup lights. models get LED taillights and big twin tailpipe tips. (The also gets dual but the tailpipes are tucked under the Look closely and you’ll see the Sport gets a slight tinge to the glass, while the gets green.

The Luxury’s looks much like year’s model, aside a new steering wheel with soft-touch buttons. Sport get a darker, more purposeful with black maple trim in place of the Luxury’s walnut, plus white-face and contrasting colors on seats and panels. My only major has to do with the Luxury’s light-colored In direct sun the reflected glare off the was brutal. Glare wasn’t a with the black dash of the I drove.

What I like about the new E-Class is the improved of standard equipment. Look up and see the first major change: A Two of them, actually, one over the seat (which opens) and one the rear seat (which An option on last year’s the sunroof is now standard. A motorized blind covers the two panes to out the sun; unfortunately front and cannot be covered or uncovered

The 2007 E’s center is just as button-happy and complex as year’s model, but the phone now works with Bluetooth (Previously the keypad was a dud unless you the optional built-in phone.) new on the standard equipment list: A Harmon-Kardon stereo system six-disc CD changer.

Interior space is generous up one unusually tall journalist me the new E was one of the few cars that accommodated him Unfortunately, I had to sit behind this and were it not for the deep cutouts into the seatback, I wouldn’t been able to do it without my knees surgically removed.

On the Power, power, and more

The 268 hp 3.5 liter V6 engine made its in the 2006 E350. It’s a engine, smooth, quiet and powerful. I didn’t see how things get any better — until I the E550’s new 5.5 liter V8. It puts out an 382 hp, but you’d never know it in driving. Most cars this kind of power are trying to get away from but the E550 is docile as can be. Only you stomp the accelerator will you see it’s capable of — and does it ever fly!

The trip computers reported MPG in the in the E350 and low 20s in the E550, impressive how much power these have (and how often I was it). The 7-speed automatic, in both cars, no doubt to the rear-wheel-drive E’s great mix of and economy.

The E550 gets air springs that give it a ride with better control in the curves. Traditional springs give the E350 a ride but also make it smaller and more nimble. cars get lower steering for ’07, meaning that steering wheel movement is to turn the car. I thought the was wonderful on windy roads, but freeway driving required tiny corrections.

Last year’s E-class had of the features I like in the 2007 including the wonderful 3.5 liter V6 top-notch safety kit, and crafted interior. But when I sat in the seat and looked around, it didn’t feel like worth of car.

With the E-Class, that’s no longer the Thanks to premium features the two-row sunroof, Harmon-Kardon Bluetooth phone integration and of Luxury or Sport packages, the new earns its $50,550 base And the sparkling performance of the V8 and competence of the air justify the extra $8,450 for the

Is it perfect? Not quite. Though I the improved steering response in the I wish it wasn’t such a to pilot the E in a straight line. And option prices, not available at of writing, are traditionally quite That said, Mercedes alluded to package pricing in with the E-Class’ new-found equation.

If I had $50 to $60k to spend on a car, the old wouldn’t have been my choice. But the 2007 is a totally story. With its new-found on style and value, the 2007 E-Class is a much better car and a much better buy.
