Best Mercedes-Benz Ever: E-Class

Mercedes-Benz W124 sedan

Coming home a long bike ride I kept looking at the cars on the side of the road, looking for that stood out. And out of all of the that caught my eye, was a 1992 (or so) Mercedes-Benz E-Class in good condition—not bad for a car that is 20 years old. And I thought for the time; that is the finest ever, which is quite a to make given their automotive history.

I know this is a highly and emotional topic, but after soul-searching and contemplating and pontificating, and a beer or two, I have that the W124 Mercedes-Benz is the best Merc ever.

Heresy, you say? Maybe a 300 SL Gullwing pops to mind? an AMG or two can blow the doors off it, you say? about the massively awe-inspiring 300 SEL 6.3 the late ‘60s—especially in that maroon? What about an or two? None of these was a taxi, and many of them had performance and pedigree within the empire.

Look, I could production numbers, and such. as the 2.5+ million W124s were sold across the over an 11-year period. many of those were taxis, but that doesn’t from the stunning sales for a car. I could also go the numerous performance versions heart-stopping V-8s, the, longevity of the turbodiesels, or even the station wagons that are in demand as used cars the globe. But none of those really makes my argument maybe the production figures do, but only part of it).

What I believe made E-Class the mid-size luxury to have was that it was one of the most Mercedes-Benz cars to incorporate that is the Mercedes-Benz brand—and encompasses a lot. It’s solidity, longevity, safety, engineering excellence and of course,

The W124 was developed by perhaps one of the designers ever to lay pen to paper, Sacco. Two other designers had a hand, Joseph Gallitzendrfer and Pfeiffer, and should be recognized for a truly timeless, elegant, and brand-enhancing set of lines, inside and From the beveled edges, to the trunk that cut drag to the masculine sides and perfect between front and back, hasn’t been a Mercedes-Benz has had this kind of design and longevity.

The interior isn’t to be forgotten There is a visual structure in the Its layout is balanced and driver-focused. It has ergonomics, great seats (I got a in this vehicle on multiple so I can attest to that), and a kind of design sensibility that it stand out from its peers in market and still does in my

It terms of solidity, safety and excellence, this was the stiffest in its class by a wide margin and set off a of other claims by rival as to the stiffness of their chassis. It offset crash crumple and superb aerodynamics into its for a low (0.29-0.32) drag coefficient—still good by today’s standards. It had optional 4Matic, stability and control (novelties back and a cool feature that I to this day, the one-armed wiper that covered area than any other.

And don’t forget the engines. four- and five-cylinder diesels to V-8 that could chase a 911 on the Autobahn. The six-cylinder engines superbly balanced, the diesels are running to this day, and the are all refined, controlled muscular

Imagine that—a luxury car could be a sedan, convertible, wagon, and with the right a sports car. What a breadth of talent and skill. all of these factors together lead me to make this it’s the finest Mercedes-Benz in my opinion, and I still want
