How far do you have to drive to know a car is any good? Ten miles? Or maybe 100. Well, I drove over 1,800 miles in the new E-Class Estate last starting with a frantic 3am to catch a ferry from to Calais for a week’s camping, and I I loved it before I got to the end of my road. The other miles through down to Bordeaux and back up Limousin and the Somme, just to confirm my early impressions.

From the off it just felt like a much-loved pair of or a trusty cagoule. Perhaps the E-Class is the car that epitomises the brand in most people’s just as the 911 does for Porsche and the 500 for Fiat. It’s fairly but still innovative when it to be, stylish but not overly radical, but not bling, fast but not punishingly so, and but not underpowered.

I’m generalising, of course, but owned by chaps called (or maybe Andrew) who live in Suffolk, work in insurance, to London once a week, own a small boat for the weekend and a second home in France, but not and certainly not Florida. They buy a new (or likely nearly new) Estate every four or years from the same dealer, but don’t go mad with the list or opt for a massive engine and dream of unleashing its full on the A12 or really testing its Harman surround-sound system (one of the I’ve heard, by the way) on High Street.

For chaps such as Piers the sort of car they can take on across Europe or take daughter off to university in the North in, but get out feeling rested with a sense of satisfaction at the other In short, it’s the perfect car, with impeccable manners and a ride that designed to eat up miles whether in town or on the motorway.

I’m no Piers and used the as a home from home – it was far comfortable than my tiny – but I can easily see how attractive its blend of and comfort is and why it has dominated the executive-car for years (and brought profits to the German firm). also the fact that a proper estate (no shrinking or overly curved, but not really big, Audi here) a vast 695-litre boot and very practical touches.

For example, the handy electric isn’t a pricey optional – it’s standard on all models. are also two levers at the rear of the bay allow you to drop the rear for 1,950 litres of space having to walk around and the rear doors and battle the seats. This is a mini-revelation packing up camp during an French rainstorm.

The ultimate though, is that I gave my a name last week. (I was in France, after all) did me and despite some iffy where her satnav let me down on the Périphérique, I understand completely like a snug sweater, comes back to you year year.
