TEST: E430T

I never got a chance to drive a W210 The only experiences I had with W210s was on the used car lot, but only included moving the from here to there for a few Well, I had to go to Landshut and bring a used 1998 E430 (estate) and in exchange for a used C220 CDI T-Modell (S203). I know I was going to be driving in an E430 until I got there. I couldnt take pictures of the CDI since I had to take a female to Landshut with me. Thankfully, she was and talkative and it was a great drive. The CDI was a fun car too. Ive driven the facelift version as well and it drove better than this C220 CDI. Not much to say the C-Class. The 5-speed A/T was smooth and the 2.2-l 4-cylinder CDI engine was torquey and agile and surprisingly Handling was decent but nothing but the steering feel was pretty weighted. Yep, thats it.

When we arrived in Landshut, I up the C220 CDI and followed the man in charge and he me the keys to a 210 E-Klasse somewhere on the Thankfully there werent W210 E-Classes on the lot, so I the open button on the key control pad and a estate beeps and produces an of the doors sound. Thats my home. I was naturally curious to see model this was so I go behind the car to see the badge said. I was expecting an Turbodiesel or an E240 / E320, so it was a surprise when the badge at the read E430. Damn, Ive really driven a W210 and my first proper testdrive place in a V8-powered E430! I love my life. bigsmile:]

a used car, it was running on so I had to find a gas station and quickly and in 20 liters of the best gasoline had. I figured I would be this thing and would that much gas to get back. The would always pay me back the if I produced the receipt. With km (83,750 miles) on the odometer, thing would be well

Well, early on this didnt feel very Since this car came during what I call the days the interior used materials including wood, looked like colored and plastic that felt I loved the design of the cockpit, Mercedes-Benz: but the materials used werent good enough

The seats were covered in leather and felt very and uncomfortable. I never really a comfortable seating position these things felt rocks. blackeye:]

The steering was bad too. The steering feel was way to and slow acting as well as disconnected. I wasnt expecting sporty, also because was an Elegance model, but the steering felt like no feel. The was very hard as well and a noisy at times.

I wasnt very impressed these major components of the Good thing that 4.3-l V8 upfront was in good It was very smooth and quiet and nicely to driver input. I pushed the pedal a little, the V8 instantly and accelerated the estate at a very respectable pace. was the V8s output, torque was 400 Nm (295 at 3,000 RPM. Those are respectable figures for an E-Class Despite this, when the car didnt accelerate brutally. I it was fast and pretty badass, but you slammed back hard the seat. The C220 CDI I had brought up hand had a nice shove-back praise:]

I adjusted quickly to the feel, though curves no fun with this car. and suspension feel were too vague. It got the job done, but you constantly had to the trajectory. Makes me wonder if the pressure varied perhaps in all wheels, that could be one hmm.

A shame I thought. I know the wasnt one of the best MB products, but the is just beautiful IMO. conservative when looked at but radical and elegant at the same In fact, this was one of MBs most designs in 1996. Look at the and then the W210: worlds design wise. I really the W210 from a design Though I think in this the sedan looks better the estate. On the W211, the estate the sedan away in terms of IMO. sun:]

One thing I expecting was vault-like build feel. The S210 didnt well built, but it didnt feel poorly built The cockpit was rattle-free and the leather up pretty well after all miles. The vault-like feel was however. Thankfully the W211 has it.

I hammered the car a lot enjoying that of the V8, and the car drank appropriately. On some of the roads, I edged the car well 140 km/h (87.5 mph), and the limit was 100 km/h (62 mph). I did that on roads which reasonably straight and seemed cop Overtaking was piece of cake this thing too. I reached M hldorf, the gas tank was on fuel once again. Oh p] I think I caught a bad example of a 210 Most W210s on the used car lot had a steering feel, still but tighter.

Overall, it wasnt of a sports sedan and didnt sporty at all. But if you drove it and in an elegant manor, it actually pretty nicely and felt on the road. I guess the W210 was a real cruiser. These MBs have really gotten I can really feel the differences driving all these Mercedes: old and new I wasnt too impressed with the car however. Didnt feel luxurious and the comfort was terrible. suspension and steering were Some of the few plus points: engine, stable at speed and I hope I get to drive more since I have a feeling I a bad example. It wasnt one of the best but I didnt expect it to be this From what little I have with other on the dealer lot, I have a that the W210 will on a whole, better than the I got to experience. Well see.
