Mercedes-Benz rarely creates cars just for fun. they’re the Vision models show up at the Frankurt Motor every other year, or concepts for other shows, always hold clues to coming down the pike a three-pointed star.

For the 2010 Motor Show, the company’s concept is the F800 Style, to be unveiled on March 2. It’s a coupe, the same style as the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS, five seats and a range of drive technologies.

Plug-in production S-Class

On the green side of the ledger is a that accommodates entirely drivetrain technologies—in this a plug-in hybrid system 18 miles of electric range, and a fuel-cell system that electric drive motors.

The plug-in hybrid’s powertrain be an option on the next generation in 2012. It pairs a 300-hp V-6 of size with a 80-kilowatt electric motor integrated the front of a seven-speed automatic

18 miles all-electric

The combination from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds, a top speed of 155 mph. It achieves up to 75 mph on electricity alone, and the electric of up to 18 miles lets it pass zero-emissions zones anticipated in European cities.

A new Range on Map function for the navigation shows the limits on travel only battery power, nervous drivers calculate they can travel in and out of an emissions-free on electricity.

The lithium-ion battery (quoted only as more 10 kilowatt-hours) is mounted under the seat. Mercedes-Benz quotes economy of 81 miles per gallon, mileage ratings for plug-in must always taken a large grain of salt .

fuel cell

The hydrogen F800 uses a 100-kilowatt electric motor to power the wheels, with the fuel-cell mounted under the hood. The quotes a range of 375 miles on fuel stored in high-pressure

That same fuel will also be used in 200 B-Class F-Cell vehicles, on the current compact five-door B hatchback. Of those cars, 100 be sent to the U.S. for testing in like California that at least some hydrogen stations.

The long wheelbase, short and flowing roofline of the F800 are clearly derived from the full-size Vision F700 sedan shown at Frankfurt in That car too offered wide-opening doors without a B-pillar, unparalleled access to the long

On the F800, the rear doors are from an interior swivel allowing them to pivot out and backward when opened. Rolls-Royce, among others, rear-hinged rear doors (or doors), Benz would be the volume maker to do so.

Fluid styling: next

The emotive design idiom has echoes of last year’s  of BlueZero alternative-fuel concepts at the 2009 Detroit Auto though the F800 Style is a sleeker shape likely to far better aerodynamics.

Design Gordon Wagener has said the wants to continue raising the standard of its cars, which say have become tauter and muscular in recent years. expect that the F800 the next Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door

All but autonomous driving

Like all concepts, the F800 Style new safety, comfort, and display likely to show up in Benz starting in 2012 or so.

Mercedes-Benz was one of the of adaptive cruise control, and the version of its Distronic Plus includes a new Traffic Jam Assistant that all but lets the F800 drive itself through traffic.

This lets the Style automatically follow a along a curved road at up to 25 mph, including in thick without the driver having to long as the driver’s hands on the steering wheel (to prevent perhaps?). Above 25 mph, the assistance gradually abates and the takes over.
