Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 May Be The Maddest Mercedes Yet

Know what we love about Mercedes-Benz? Every time we think we’ve got their number, they do something to surprise us. Like, in this case, revealing they’ve not only built a six-wheeled G-Class with a truck bed, but that they’re gonna sell it to people with money to burn. Ballin’.

Based on a vehicle Benz whipped up for the Australian military, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6, as they call it, is just what it sounds like—a G63 AMG with an extra set of wheels. As you’d expect, these wheels receive power from the 536 horsepower, 560 lb-ft twin-turbo 5.5 liter V8, routed through a seven-speed automatic transmission, a transfer case and no less than five differential locks. The G63 AMG 6×6 is limited to 100 mph, on account of those giant off-road tires, but in spite of its 8,322-pound curb weight, it’ll reportedly hustle form 0-60 in less than six seconds.

Make no mistake, this truck ain’t just for posing—it has serious off-road chops. The tires can be automatically inflated and deflated from the driver’s seat; the G63 AMG 6×6 also boasts 18.1 inches of ground clearance, a fording depth of 39.3 inches, an approach angle of 52 degrees and a departure angles of 54 degrees, and a breakover angle of 22 degrees—all improvements over the regular, still-insanely-capable G-Class. Not surprisingly, fuel economy is expected to stink; luckily, the G63 AMG 6×6 will come with two gas tanks totaling 42 gallons capacity.

Since it’s a Benz, the G63 AMG 6×6 is jam-packed with luxury; leather and Alcantara are spread all over the guts, and a pair of captain’s chairs come standard in back. Don’t expect to carry much of a load—maximum payload is 1,433 pounds, which means with four dudes aboard, you only have capacity for 600 pounds of stuff in the bed, but that should be enough for most trips. This truck ain’t for makin’ runs to Home Depot, after all.

So how much will one of these big rigs run ya? Well, Mercedes-Benz ain’t talking specifics yet, but they do say it’ll be their second-most expensive ride—the only one pricier will be the SLS AMG Electric Drive, which costs around $457,000. We figure the G63 AMG 6×6 will sell for at least $350K when it goes on sale in October. Oh, and Benz only plans on building 30 to 50 a year, so if ya want one and can spare the scratch, call now.
