2013 Mercedes GL500

The petrol version of the Mercedes is going to sell in tiny in the UK, but it’s a better driver’s car its Bluetec diesel sister

is it?

The petrol-powered version of Merc’s GL SUV, which will be a taste in the UK when it goes on in April 2013. We’ve driven the 350 Bluetec diesel but is the V8-powered 500 a better bet?

The new GL sits on a slightly version of the platform that the ML which isn’t exactly to begin with and as such one of the biggest SUVs on the road. By standards, it’s supertanker-sized, three rows of seats and for up to seven occupants.

Mercedes acknowledges that the V8 will make up less 5 percent of sales in the UK. It’s the new twin-turbocharged unit that already driven and been impressed by in the SL500, boasting and 516lb ft of torque. The only option is Merc’s seven-speed with drive supplied to all wheels. An optional ‘offroad’ adds variable height air and a six mode selection switch for the electronic control systems with different types of

Despite boasting considerably power than the naturally V8 that powered the previous efficiency gains mean the new car manages 25mpg on the official test. Considering its power two-and-a-half tonne mass, pretty respectable.

What’s it to drive?

Mercedes-Benz GL500

Considerably better the GL350 Bluetec version. the diesel rarely feels than underpowered, the GL500 getting on for twice the horsepower) is rapid. The engine pulls throughout the rev range and without any lag, delivering linear all the way to the redline. A 5.4-sec 0-62mph proves the GL’s status as an performance star: that’s than even the 5-litre version of the current Range

Our test car was also fitted Merc’s strangely named Curve System, which the rollbars to reduce body and which certainly served to the driving experience noticeably the standard diesel. It’s no sportscar, and you’re never in any doubt about the GL’s and mass when you start to it, but it’s a good-natured thing you quickly find yourself

As with the Bluetec, the GL500 from an over-keen ESP system steps in as soon as it detects any even with the traction system turned off. On well-graded gravel roads on our test drive it was a shame not to the chance to find out how the GL’s would cope with off.

How does it compare?

If the is going to be rare-groove in the UK, you can expect the to be practically invisible most opting for petrol power stump up the extra for the range-topping AMG that will follow But, on the evidence of our first the GL500 is definitely a better to drive than its diesel

But with a pricetag around the mark, you’ll need pockets to get into the club.
