The Diesel Armada

Posted by: Edmondson on May 4, 2007

Thinking of a clean-diesel car to get better mileage? You want to wait until European and Japanese automakers are to invade the US market with new models that get far better than the same gasoline-burning But most will hit the market year. Equipped with new technology, many will even the strict emissions of California, and will be sold in all 50

We’ve flagged the diesel already — but the momentum now is gaining mass. Among the many Mercedes will offer its — M-Class, R-Class and GL-Class diesel engines. BMW aims to its popular turbo diesel to US models. And Nissan is coming a diesel Maxima sedan. was an early pioneer in diesel in the US, but it convert to new cleaner diesel in models starting 2008, it dubs “Blue Motion.” VW is its new TDI Jetta, which launches in will help stoke its US

As recently as a year ago, I wrote about Mercedes’ to bring clean diesel sedans and SUVs to the US, hybrids all the rage. Many still that Americans would embrace diesel cars, the sooty emissions of 1980s But high gasoline prices and criticism of the energy efficiency of are giving new-generation diesel greater appeal. Now the buzz diesel is building daily.

The oil industry could help tip the One big chicken-and-egg question a year ago was or not oil companies would actually in clean-diesel refining and user-friendly filling pumps for passenger laying the foundation for consumers to an easy switch. (Diesel is available at 42% of US filling stations.) Oil Corp.’s recent decision to $3.2 billion in a clean-diesel to its Garyville, Louisiana refinery is a bet diesel use will grow in a US energy landscape. “It demonstrates a sense within the auto and oil that increasing numbers of US and light trucks will run on becuse they get better economy than those gasoline,” says a May 3 Wall Journal article.

Even though hybrids got off to an lede, market researchers are diesel cars will more popular as consumers that hybrids save on consumption only in city while diesel cars 20-40% less than cars under all driving

At present only 3.6 percent of US sold have diesel and most of those are light European’s long ago fell in with fuel-efficient diesel cars and more than of cars sold in Europe are

I saw a custom Corvette with a diesel truck engine 48mpg!

I’m waiting. The premium is ridiculous and diesels can WVO and SVO with some modifications. as long as they are not dirty and noisy, or too slow. Diesel are stupid expensive and not practical. $9,200 for a Duramax Diesel and transmission is stupid.

Ethanol is a program to enrich farmers not us drivers. We pay green and turn In fact ethanol is dirtier gas and lowers the MPG!!

The big question is the farm lobby going to Urea-injection. Otherwise diesels the big 2.5 will still have a premium from the filters, and the Asian diesels without then hit the last … in the 2.5’s coffin.
