Mercedes-Benz has revealed an AMG-fied version of the GLA compact crossover. Based on the same platform as the new A-Class, the GLA is simply a jumped-up A-Class hatchback. With inputs from AMG which transform the GLA into something more sporty and with a good sense of humor, if you know what I mean.

So, the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG is Stuttgart’s answer to the Audi RS Q3 and we think it looks better than the Audi. Having said that, we really do like the newly adopted design direction at Mercedes-Benz. The GLA is a good example of a crossover coupe with a raked rear windshield and an overall handsome profile.

The GLA45 AMG shares its powertrain with the A45 AMG and the CLA 45 AMG sedan. The 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo puts out 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Yes, that’s a lot from such a tiny engine. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission takes care of harnessing the power produced.

This is the same gearbox they offer on the latter two. Also, 4Matic all-wheel drive is standard on the GLA45 AMG much like its cousins. Mercedes -Benz is yet to announce the pricing for the new crossover. We expect them to make an official statement during the Detroit motor show. Until then, here are the latest official images.

Personally, I like the exterior styling of the Mercedes-Benz GLA. AMG take it a step further by injecting some testosterone. So, now it has large air intakes on the front bumper with skid plates. The twin-slat radiator grille is gone, replaced with a single slat with a large three-pointed star in the center. The headlights with their unique LED eyebrows don’t just look premium, but add on to the style quotient.

From the rear, the wide haunches over the rear wheels give the GLA a more masculine look. The roof elegantly gives way to the rather small and steeply raked rear glass. The tail lamp cluster may be from the standard GLA, but the rear bumper gives away its true identity. The bumper has additional mesh grille with breathers on either side. Quad-AMG pipes stick out of the scuff plates.

It is not what you’d call spacious in here. The coupe-like exterior proportions leave almost enough space for occupants. That said, rear seat comfort is a thing of debate. I, for instance won’t prefer left in the back seat on a long journey.

This being the AMG version, few would fancy occupying the rear bench, for the front half of the interior is where all the action takes place. The dashboard is from the standard GLA. albeit with an AMG twist. Red contrast stitching, red seat belts and carbon fiber trim, along with black leather makes up majority of the interior.

The COMAND infotainment system has been carried over from the other models and so is the large display unit that sort of floats on the dashboard. This being the AMG version, the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox can be operated via paddles behind the steering wheel. Oh, and there’s an AMG button too.

Drivetrain and Suspension

The Mercedes GLA45 AMG shares its underpinnings with the A45 and the CLA 45 AMG models. This means, you get the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which powers the hatchback and sedan models. Power output peaks at 355 horsepower, while the engine generates 332 pound-feet of torque.

The compact crossover is based on a modular architecture that supports all-wheel drive. Much like the A45 AMG, the GLA45 too uses Mercedes patent 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Having said that, a simple 7-speed dual-clutch transmission takes care of juggling the power. Although, it has four-wheel drive, Mercedes-Benz won’t offer low range.

Moreover, it is a variable all-wheel drive system which electronically controls the torque sent to the rear axle. In normal driving conditions, the GLA45 AMG behaves like any other front-wheel drive car.

This AMG version gets heavy-duty axles sprung using a sports suspension setup with stiffer dampers. The steering ratio has been tweaked while cross-drilled discs replace standard rotors. Mercedes-Benz also offers carbon-ceramic discs as an option.

The newest addition to Porsche’s line-up is the Macan compact SUV. Built around the Audi Q5, the Macan is unlike any standard Q5. It packs Porsche DNA and the company claims it to be heck of a sporty crossover that can hit the rough stuff whenever required.

The Porsche Macan S costs about the same as the Audi RS Q3. It is powered by an engine that develops 300 horsepower in segment that is slowly being populated by quite a few big names.

The Audi Q3 is the smallest SUV in the German car maker’s line-up. Audi decided to build a hotter version of the Q3 with more power and a not-so-subtle body kit which resulted in the Audi RS Q3.

Under the hood is a 2.5-liter engine which is generates 310 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Audi’s patent all-wheel drive system, Quattro comes standard. The RS Q3 is based around a standard Q3 and can be distinguished by the large wheels and RS body kit. Moreover, it isn’t much of a looker when compared with the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG.

The BMW X1 doesn’t actually compare with the Audi and the Mercedes, but it does pack some decent punch. The 3.0-liter straight-six churns out a healthy 300 horsepower. That said, it isn’t enough to beat the Mercedes GLA45 AMG to the quarter mile.

Having reiterated the fact that the BMW X1 xDrive35i isn’t a direct rival of the AMG GLA or the RS Q3, the BMW does excel when it comes to practicality. It is much larger and costs considerably less. Until, BMW launches a true rival to the other two cars, this all-wheel drive BMW X1 is all the GLA45 has to deal with.

To summarize, the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG looks fantastic. It is probably the most stylish compact crossover in the market today. The AMG tuned 2.0-liter engine is monster and the raised ride height means you can actually take this car off-road.
