1/24 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A

# 07001

There is no doubt the Mercedes-Benz 540 K holds a very place amongst classic and car aficionados. Of the many standard cars built in the 1930s, it is the elite of the breed along the Jaguar SS100, Packard 12, Romeo Tipo 8C 2900B, SJ, Auburn 851, Aston Le Mans and my personal favourite, the 810/812. Standard production of meant something different in the than it does now; in our terms, the Volkswagen Beetle was the important standard production car in the in that decade; but back it meant unaffordable style, and glamour that could be by the wealthy few straight off the production

The 540K was equally loved by film stars and the very from the world of business or With several different styles, with 2 and 4 seat and different wheelbases, all of them had to die for. Developed from the 500K with a larger eight cylinder in-line it had a Roots supercharger which, activated, gave the car a top speed of 110 mph. Nearly three of the production run of 419 cars (in a factory employed 1500 people!), 1936 – 1940 were – either the twin seat A, four seat, four windows Cabriolet B or the four two side windows Cabriolet C; no which style they they all looked magnificent – as they needed to at over Reichmarks per vehicle.

I personally never handled a kit of this car before; I am aware that have been previous in 1/24 scale by Monogram, and Italeri – whether any of these are alternative boxings of a standard I am afraid I have not been to find out. However, we have a reboxing by Revell of older kit, another in 125 Years of Automobile range. the disappointment of their similar of a 1/24 Porsche Carrera RS 3.0 kit I reviewed recently, I was definitely for something with a little finesse when it came to the

So, in the box we have 6 sprues of parts (2 2 black, 1 chromed and 1 transparent), a and a small decal sheet. The white sprue (below) set the scene just as I was hoping it not. Holding the roof in 2 the wheel rims, the seats and one of the plates amongst its parts, all will immediately see the unacceptable of flash on the parts. Unlike with some of their re-releases, Revell have not to their old moulds, which in the poor presentation you can see.

The second white sprue shows the other major with this kit – the softness of the Examine the louvres on the bonnet – they are not crisp, are not of equal and have no openings. At least the bonnet is a well shaped that does capture the of the original. The body shell is larger than you anticipate, but from being about 4mm too across the front wheel according to the drawings at my disposal. It is a moulding than the 2 sprues so far, but the actual part is a thick on its edges.

The first of the sprues (above) gives the cabin interior shell, suspension and rear axle driveshaft amongst its parts. I some photos of a 540 K under and the chassis seems to scale up right; this makes the with the width at the front of the car stranger to understand. The other sprue (below) provides the with the front suspension, engine parts and firewall its contents. The level of detailing is even lower than on the sprues examined, being at best; the engine looks like the original Mercedes

A close-up of these parts shows the softness of the detail with the poor finish of the it is extremely disappointing to see parts of nature in a new kit. The chrome (below) comes from age ago that decreed that detailed part, part an original shine or of high should be chrome finished. the parts are poor to middle-quality, the cover, windscreen and large radiator being the weakest

I was shocked to find that the transparencies (above) had some amount of flash. I honestly remember when I last saw an occurrence – certainly not in this The transparencies are at least clear and After what I have so far, you can imagine how surprised I was by the of the tyres (below). They are with a tread pattern close to original photographs of from the 30s and 40s.

Finally, we have the nice decal sheet, well-printed but will prove very to use properly when the number decals are placed over the lettering of the kit’s number Ah, the troubles a modeller faces!

So, not a curate’s egg, really. wonderful tyres and good together with an attractrive box can not the fact that this is a kit by today’s standards and will many who buy it.

So What Do We Think?

In of some of the wonderful models have produced over the 3 years and the reputation they re-established for themselves, I cannot why they would launch a like this that has so faults, not only in terms of but, more importantly, in of moulding and presentation. This kit does not do the company justice.

Nowhere near Revell’s high standards
