1950 170S

1950 170S (W136 IV Series)

By Bob President, Texas Hill Section MBCA

Being a officer in MBCA can be a dangerous and undertaking. For example, in the fall of Keith Kathie Steele Treasurer and Secretary), my wife and I visited Tom Hicks Mercedes in Corpus Christi for a Meet session. A great trip and people. But alas Tom Hicks had a Mercedes Adenauer sitting on his floor. Perfectly restored. Intoxicating. And infectious. I returned and could think of nothing except the appearance of that Mercedes (the infection). the next month I would check EBay and Craigs to see if any pre-1960 Mercedes were Amazingly, I located a 1950 170S being offered for here in Texas. I looked, I I bought (the expense!). But are no regrets, only smiles.

As John Keats wrote in A thing of beauty is a joy for ever; Its increases.

I can think of no better to describe my 1950 Mercedes pre-World War II style, classic simple design, clean

It was a gorgeous November afternoon the burgundy classic was delivered to my on the back of a flatbed truck of the previous owner). The entire was more like an adoption a purchase. The former owner provided me with all of the maintenance and history of the car that he had and that he had from the car’s earlier who imported it in 1988 from where it had been used in the of a World War II film. The feeling was acquiring an outstanding work of art and an artifact at the same time.

The 170S has rear-hinged front (… doors), running stand-alone headlights, and an accordion top folds back to create a sunroof. Very simple the star on the radiator cap, one on the and on each hubcap. The name only appears on the radiator beneath the cap. The model 170S, is located beneath the star on the trunk. The four engine starts easily and smoothly. The four forward transmission shifts with the floor shifter has a very shift pattern. My 17 year old really enjoys riding in car; she says it is like a machine and that she feels in era while riding.

Most things work on the some things don’t. Oil and temperature gauges are great. gauge works intermittently. and clock not operational (perhaps has stopped when in the car). system is so-so. But for a 62 year old the 170S is excellent. I enjoy the of having a project, of talking other car folks about to find parts or who can do quality I enjoy researching the history, about the production years, and come across several texts and repair manuals for the model. I purchased declared insurance at a low rate and have the car as an antique with the State of

Benz 1950

To be honest, I enjoy cleaning and the 170S as much as driving it. to stand in the garage and survey the grill and outline always a smile. And yes, sometimes I sit in the driver’s seat or back and talk softly to the car; it answer, but I know it hears me and the pride and happiness I exude in its owner. Crazy? Maybe but you can if you’re a car guy.
