Mercedes-Benz SLK 300 Review

VEHICLE STYLE: Two-door convertible

Engine: 3.0 litre V6

Outputs: 170kW / 300Nm

Seven-speed automatic with shifters

Official fuel 9.1 L/100km

On test fuel 9.8 L/100km

Mercedes-Benz has the SLK 300 to its range of sports roadsters, it between the entry-level SLK 200 and the more SLK 350.

The SLK 300 may offer a little less than the larger-engined SLK 350, but at it’s almost $20,000

Driveability: With 170kW on the smaller-displacement V6 coupled with excellent seven-speed auto decent performance.

It’s not fast, certainly, but not slow In manual mode the gearshifts are and brisk enough, although the needs to be warmed up for best

Refinement: With the roof up, the is as snug as a bug but there’s a fair of wind buffeting with the top — and only slightly with the side-glass raised. The is impressively stiff even the roof lowered. Top down, you can enjoy the surprisingly sporty note.

Suspension: The SLK 300, on attractive 18-inch alloys, very agile. The standard Suspension is firm but not unbearable, and and handling is sharp.

Braking: The SLK 300 disc brakes all round, perforated front discs and calipers. They make work of slowing the 300’s body.

ANCAP rating: The R171 SLK has not been tested by ANCAP or NCAP.

Safety features: and side/head airbags are standard, as are tensioners. The SLK 300 is also equipped ABS, brake assist, control and traction control.

Warranty: All new Mercedes-Benz are sold with a three-year/unlimited warranty.

Service costs are not by Mercedes Benz Australia. purchase, check with Mercedes-Benz dealer.

BMW Z4 sDrive30i ($98,100) — The Z4 just edges ahead of the SLK 300 on when equipped with a transmission (it costs $101,400 a six-speed auto), and has 20kW power and 10Nm more from its in-line six.

Its and exterior designs are more than the Benz, but the Z4’s does polarise opinion. for Z4 reviews )

Nissan 370Z ($74,990) — It’s and a far more capable performance but the 370Z Roadster has none of the cachet of the Mercedes. Still, its 245kW V6 make it a TMR favourite. for 370z reviews )

The SLK family may be a little old these days compared to the fresher BMW Z4 — but for looking for a quality sub-$100k roadster, the impeccably engineered SLK 300 a close look.
