Is luxury a value?

Since it was as a 2010 model. the GLK has been one of leading sellers. Mercedes that some nips and were in order, and a refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLK landed in my driveway, to be driven. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC arrived with a price of $39,090 ($48,555 as a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and EPA fuel estimates of 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway. drive.

First Glance

I had to photos of the 2012 GLK side-by-side the 2013 GLK to find the changes Mercedes claims resulted in exterior styling. If you squint, you can see the new GLK is a little more truckish, a crisper than before. mind the difference — GLK is a looking crossover. Based on the that underlies M-B’s C-Class sedan, GLK is not nearly as big in as it appears in photographs. My favorite of the exterior design are the short both front and rear. precious little GLK hanging out the standard 19 alloy wheels, makes the vehicle extremely to maneuver and park in tight

You definitely get what you pay for with Fit and finish on the exterior of the vehicle is with deep glossy and shiny chrome. Every is crisp, every gap is even, and fit together like jewelry. My vehicle wore a coat of a paint color, Cuprite which looked like a deep metallic chocolate. not usually a fan of brown cars, but brown is the new black, just

Inside the the changes are a little easier to Most significantly, the gear has been moved and changed. It to be a conventional lever in the middle of the console, set up in the linear PRND The gear selector is now a branch off of the column tree, which up the center console space for a storage bin/ash tray, by a sliding tambour top. The new selector takes a little bit of used to. It’s not linear — you push up for reverse, down for drive, and depress a for park. Additionally, you can take control of the seven-speed automatic with flappy paddles on the wheel.

Other features on the dash been upgraded as well. The new air conditioning vents are great, and easily adjusted to redirect bringing to mind a luxury vent. I have to applaud the M-B for resisting the temptation to replicate the badge in the vent — I would have blinged it out way, and I’m sure the will have a go.

M-B Tex seat which could fool a lot of with their real look and feel, are standard on the Close inspection gives M-B Tex’s secret, but the synthetic is worlds away from seats of old. I still real leather — but not at the $2,100 package price Mercedes demands on the GLK. when you select the Leather you also have to select the Premium Package, which that the cost of your GLK jumped over five and a grand just to feed leather fetish. Maybe got a problem.

My test vehicle was with a $2,790 Multi-Media of options that included COMAND system with audio, and voice control with single knob in the console and a 7 color display at the top of the center stack, right it belongs. It works pretty but tends to send you hunting for a little too often. I frequently had to up on a function while the car was moving, the hunt for the right input was too COMAND would be easier to with practice, but some are still just too fiddly.

On the Road

In one important respect, GLK is all-new for 2013. The new 3.5-liter V6 that lurks beneath the is a narrower, 60-degree unit a high compression ratio. The old GLK was also a 3.5-liter V6, but its cylinders arranged at a 90 degree angle, is a less compact arrangement. The new produces 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, up 268 hp and 258 lb-ft for the old lump. And thanks to injection, which atomizes for more efficient combustion, the new GLK is and more fuel-efficient than the old despite identical curb and dimensions.

GLK also gets an interesting feature, ECO Start/Stop, a defeatable that is activated by default time you start the vehicle. you’re at a stop and you’d GLK to settle in to a slow idle, the stops instead. The climate continues to operate, the radio plays, you can open the windows, but the isn’t running. Step on the and the engine comes to life and you’re back in the swing. ECO is nearly transparent. I barely it in operation. We’re going to see feature, which is already on hybrids, spreading more and to conventional gasoline-only vehicles. it works as seamlessly as it does on the it’s a great way to save

My test vehicle came with Mercedes’ all-wheel system, 4MATIC, which about $2,000 to the bottom over the rear-wheel drive Mercedes is rightfully proud of the safety features that with GLK, including airbags, active headrests, ABS, BAS, adaptive and more. GLK even gets Assist, which monitors steering and throttle inputs to whether or not a cup of coffee is in order. GLK will not serve the coffee you have to pull off the road and get own. Maybe the next vehicle will remedy

I’m to a lot of the 2013 GLK’s features, of which I haven’t even in this review yet. I like the crossover’s exhaust — a beefy, throaty that’s much lustier expected. Handling is good, decent steering feel and a suspension. The tweaks and upgrades GLK received have all pushed it toward luxury. But a few flaws particularly away from the seat. The second row is too tight, insufficient legroom for adults. into the passenger cabin is too with tall sills require a lot of leg lift in order to and exit. Then, there’s the of value. Add a few options, like seats ($750), a Lane Package ($850), a Premium ($3,450) and Multimedia Package and you’re closer to $50,000 $40,000 in a hurry. And still, you get a proximity key, leather surfaces or special wheels.

I could definitely live the GLK, especially with the performance that the new engine But being a bottom-line buyer, have to really fall in with the whole package, and a GLK that was equipped with the features that I knew use — and nothing extra before I would plunk my cash.
