Curbside Classic: Mercedes (W109) – Trying To Make Of The Magic Number “300″

14, 2014

When walking the dog a back, I came across a 300SEL parked in the street.  this,” I thought.  “Another putting California headlights they shouldn’t be?”

I met the owners who told me it had the 2.8 liter six the hood and was pretty much A quick online search what I was looking at, but not the why.

Cut to the CC post on the Nova/Seville hybrid. So was I to know the why that I interjected and patiently explained for me. Little did I that this was akin to the Superbowl to ask the referee who his childhood were. What follows is my attempt to retell Paul’s and expound on it a bit.

In the first few after WWII, Mercedes got on its feet building only models (170V, 170S), on pre-war cars. But after the was established in 1948, Germany’s roared off, and Mercedes was eager to show the world it too was back in the luxury car game.

In 1951, it launched two new six-cylinder the mid-range 220 and the top-line 300 (shown), dubbed “Adenauer” in honor of Konrad Adenauer’s steady Although their frames still based on pre-war and the body styling was conservative, both had brand-new SOHC sixes (M180/130, and M186/189); that would both a long line of successors.

The 300 was a bit staid, but already in 1951, showed the superb 300S and Cabriolet versions, some of the last cars that reflected the spirit of the splendid Mercedes of the thirties. They some of the very finest most expensive) cars at the time, and sought after by stars and such.

And they quite a contrast to contemporary luxury cars of the mid-fifties, a Cadillac Eldorado convertible. One actually see them as the origins of the resurgence that soon American car design. Genuine bars, just the thing to Detroit’s finest future

But the numbers “300″ were to significant in another way: on the track. Mercedes also to also recapture its pre-war glories with the 1952 a sports-racing coupe using the 2996 cc six, but angled on its for a lower profile. Of course, led to the legendary production 300SL.

But even that wasn’t In 1954, the 300SLR made a impact, a magnificent sports-racing car from the W196 Grand racer. While it also had a 3 engine, this one was totally from the other 300s: an racing straight eight, direct fuel injection and valve actuation, no less. It somewhere over 300 hp, a fabulous for the times.

Thus, at the end of the fifties, the “300″ were iconic in as they represented the very “ ” (Economic Miracle) that West Germany and Mercedes players again.

By 1961, the was on its third chassis code and had long in the tooth. A replacement was prepared (600), but until a stopgap was required to keep the 300 number on a saloon.  Hence the 300SE.  Given its own W-code this short-lived vehicle was with M189 300, suspension, lashings of extra power steering, a substantial markup on the W111 Fintail and its own showroom. There was even an wheelbase model (300SE shown above), but it did not use the “L” as part of its deck badging.

In 1965, the W108 was launched.  by Paul Bracq, this was than a mere plucked a cleaner greenhouse and crisper delivered what many to be the archetypal Mercedes Benz.  It was launched as the 250S, 250SE and Since the “Grosser” 600 was already in the W108 was really a replacement for the six-cylinder “Heckflosse” cars, not the version. Which gets since there was also a in the W108 line-up (called essentially a higher-performance W108.

But the 300SEL W109 was a decided up in price and amenities, and essentially out a new niche in the Mercedes hierarchy, the lesser S-Class sedans and the It was visually distinguished from the by all that chrome trim on the and of course its 4.5 inches longer rear doors. Under the was the 3 liter M189 “big and inside, the W109 was lavished more and finer wood, carpet and other details, and the thing was carried by self-leveling air The badge on the boot and the glovebox of the said 300SEL.

By the end of 1967, the M189 300 engine was obsolete.  Overly heavy and it was replaced in the 300SEL W109 the fuel injected M130 2.8 which made essentially the power.  Here is where get a bit even more complex: At the of 1968, MB released the W108 This was essentially a long-wheelbase of the 280SE or a ‘stripper’ version of the depending on your point of So now you could buy a 280SEL with the 2.8 or a with the same 2.8 six, on the size of your wallet and for prestige.

I have focused on two models for this post.  As you can there appears to be little the pictured 280SEL and 300SEL, from diligence of ownership.  inspection of the exterior reveals chrome highlighting for the 300SEL on the and door window surrounds.

The of the 300SEL is plusher and features wood (burled instead of on the dash and inside door surrounds.  This particular recently had its air suspension replaced a more conventional system.

In 1963, the Adenauer replacement was The W100 “Grosser” 600 was such a expressed vehicle, it has come to the apogee of diplomatic giants.

In Erich Waxenberger shoehorned the V8 the 600 into the W109 which on to create yet another legend; the 6.3, the Teutonic muscle car began for the 1968 MY). And a few years, the new smaller V8s were dropped in the W108 (280 SEL and w109 (300SEL 3.5 and 4.5), even more potentially ingredients to the alpha-numeric Mercedes

In the shadow of the 600 flagship status, the 300 might appear to have superseded. By 1963, the 300SL and roadster had also  been with the W113 Pagoda.  By the M189 300 engine was no longer in So why did MB persist with the 300 designation to 1972 and the end of the W109’s lifespan?

In a 300SLR ploughed into the at Le Mans.  Whilst blame for the could be apportioned between drivers, Mercedes Benz from racing and were not to re-enter the arena for decades.  At very point in time, the arrows were the dominant in Grand Prix and long road racing.  Mercedes was also leading the charge on the front with the some of the automobiles in the world. For a nation this number meant than just a cubic

This 300SEL 2.8 is owned by a with a sweet story.  The is Australian and the wife is American, and in London they decided to a family.  He persuaded her to move to with the promise of a gift.  car is that gift; it’s a curbside-parked, child-carrying classic and she wants to sell it.  Valentine’s Day to both of them!
