The carburetor engine 250 S has 96 KW (130 HP), and the injecting he engine 250 SE develops 110 KW (150 HP). For the first time below the 300er of engine the earlier two-stamp injection pump plant (220 SE, tail fin W111) with the disturbance-susceptible two three-distributors was changed on six individual lining up temples without manifolds.

Contrary to its predecessor model new 300 the SE no more was equipped with pneumatic cushioning. For it was how also the two 2,5-Liter-Typen contain, a hydropneumatic balance feather/spring at the rear axle in the basic price, which keeps the level of the structure constant. With the predecessor series of the tail fins the hydropneumatic balance feather/spring was only with the universal combination models mentioned and with 230 S standard. Buyers of other tail fin types had to take Vorlieb with a transverselying coil spring or pay surcharge.

1966 were extended the model pallet with the type 300 SEL by the series W109, which exhibited one by 100 mm extended wheel base. The space gain benefitted thereby exclusively the floor space in the rear and the entrance width of the As is the case for its direct predecessor with same type designation a pneumatic cushioning belonged to the standard also with new 300 SEL.

W109 (300 SEL) appear similar from the body as W108 (280 S, SE and SEL). The production of the models 250 SE and 300 SE ended with beginning of the yearly 1968. As successors in January the types 280 S and 280 SE were introduced, which differed only in motorizing and in equipment details from their predecessors. The again developed 2,8-Liter-Sechszylindermotor carried 103 KW out (140 HP) in the carburetor version (s) and with fuel injection (SE) 118 KW (160 HP).

An uprated version of the fuel injection engine with 125 KW (170 HP) was not only built into the two-seat sports car 280 SL, but came — likewise starting from January 1968 — also in 300 SEL to the employment, where it replaced the seitherigen 3,0-Liter-Leichtmetallmotor. The steering column was arranged likewise new, with percussion elements for more security with rear end collisions.

Top model of the model row became in March 1968 the type 300 SEL 6,3 . which the V8-Motor and the automatic transmission of the 600er Mercedes had and reached with 184 KW (250 HP) the achievement potential of sports cars. Its conception on that Geneva autosalon was a sensation, particularly since it had not given any suggestions in the apron. From the outside was the 6,3 only at the broader tires to recognize the halogen double headlights and the additional longs range headlight. Although it over 10.000, – DM more cost SE as 300 SEL and more was than twice as expensive like the 280, encountered the 300 SEL 6,3 lively interest and in a number of items by 6.526 units one produced.

The 6,3 entrance in route car racing and in the Rallye sport found very fast. The car became also a popular Tuning object, since the engine was specifically gently laid out despite its high achievement, and experts it with little trouble further 50 KW to draw could: the birth of the Tuners AMG.


In the autumn 1969 the 300 SEL with 2,8-Liter-Sechszylindermotor of the type 300 SEL 3,5 one replaced, whose power supply unit was completely again more designed smaller a V8-Motor with 3,5 litres capacity and 147 KW (200 HP). Starting from March 1971 this engine was used also in the types 280 SE 3,5 and 280 SEL 3,5 (with conventional Stahlfederung). This was necessary, in order to meet the American exhaust regulations. The achievement was with 146 KW (198 HP). These engines served first launching the engines of the successor W116 . with which Mercedes Benz introduced for the first time officially the designation S-class.
