Mercedes W125 — of its discovery in the 1960s

17 April

Editors note: Colin is a very well known collector and dealer in the rarest cars. At a time in the 1960s, these cars were not as as they are today, Colin a specialist in finding the most cars in the most unusual all over the world.

This is the of finding a pre-war Mercedes Prix W125.

Let’s up the story when Colin is in travelling back to Europe in from an extended visit to Africa. He has already discovered an 8C, an original Maserati 6C Monoposto and a ex Marzotto brothers Ferrari

From Addis Ababa I to Cairo but was too skint to afford a to the Pyramids — I still not been. It was there I received a offering me a pre-war Mercedes. was the W125. The car was basically complete and had languishing on the East German/Polish since 1945 where it had been hidden by the Russians. We what must have a record price of $30,000 in at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin. The had even given it a new coat of paint. I suppose the W125 is the historic racing car. It was in layout to my 250F — a straight eight supercharged developing in excess of 500 bhp, a De Dion rear suspension and speed transaxle.

It was enormous (which suited and I was lucky to obtain some help from Firestone for the 23 and in rebuilding the crankshaft. It probably that I was getting into 1 in 1969. We demonstrated the car at the Daily Trophy on a half bald set of tyres and I wore a red leather helmet! Incredibly exciting as not was it the first time I had driven the but a W125 had not been seen since before the War. It easy and fun to drive, was very and the spectators most appreciative. more could you want?

We competed in various races 1970 and 1971, the high winning the Seaman Trophy in years — fun to know Dick Seaman had driven the car By 1973 I had rather lost in the historic single seater as the Mercedes was also competitive in the series including my beloved 250Fs and the like. That with thoughts of what a would cost made me the decision to sell my beloved to Neil Corner.

The car is now beyond price and these Mercedes are now only demonstrated at the finest historic racing such as Goodwood by ex Grand Drivers (John Surtees for Anyone who has heard the sound of a Mercedes will never it.
