The van, based on the Renault and built in France by a Renault under a model sharing with Mercedes, is offered in with an 81kW 1.5-litre engine and a range of four-cylinder engines up to 84kW.

However, one of the sticking points for MBPA’s planners is that the diesel only with a six-speed gearbox – a shortcoming for an urban-focused van in market.

MBPA senior manager for relations, product and corporate David McCarthy confirmed to that the Citan was now off the launch for Australia, mainly because could not deliver an appropriate mix of options and other specifications.

He the decision had less to do with the rating for the Citan, which he was now a respectable four stars.

The attracted headlines for all the wrong last year when it was a mere three stars in the New Car Assessment Program (ENCAP) safety ratings, embarrassing and denting its safety record.

Mercedes swiftly revamped the safety equipment and resubmitted it for testing, convincing ENCAP to its rating to four stars.

Australia’s top-selling van in the class, the Caddy, offers a 2.0-litre engine with automatic in its long-wheelbase Caddy Maxi

The Caddy last year for more than 60 per cent of the which is only tiny in amounting to little more 3000 units a year.

Renault’s Kangoo, on which the is based, achieved just 360 in 2013 for 12 per cent of the segment.
