While the iconic TAG Heuer of today are the Monaco and Carrera, were very different ten ago when the re-editions were a novelty, rather than models. The 1000 and 2000 were the models that to symbolise TAG Heuer, but while the was the first TAG Heuer diving it was a relatively simple range changed little over the The 2000 Series was available in a array of models- in both and quartz movements and in dive chronographs and even a USD50,000 version.

While the 2000 is by most watch collectors the series never got the credit it deserved for the quality of the movements in the first Heuer series- a module that would be used by Audemars Piguet in its Oak Offshore and a quartz chronograph the same design principle as TAG Heuer Calibre S. The series as the Heuer 2000 in the dark of 1982 when Heuer’s seized control of the company and bowed out in 2005 as the TAG Heuer Along the way, there many variants- some some not-so-good and a one in particular is a modern classic.

Generation 1: Heuer 2000

The success of the 1000 in the late and early 1980s posed of a dilemma for Heuer- after the company prided itself as a maker of precision chronographs, yet the was a quartz diving watch. The new was an attempt to build on the popularity of the Diver, but to extend the range quartz and automatic chronographs.

Designed by Eddie the design had a flatter, more case than the 1000 an upgraded bracelet (replacing the “jubilee” bracelet of the 1000), a dial and a new bezel design “borrowed” less from the Submariner template. The watch was a and more modern design the 1000 series, but still several key elements of the 1000 include the crown guard and the style hand (on the non-chrono. The watch was also the first TAG model to boast the “ Six Features ” would prove the guiding of the brands design through to the 1990s.

2000 Watch

The 2000 diver watch was in two versions. The first (top below) featured a black bezel insert and a dial small triangular hour except for the baguette-style markers at 9 and 6 and an over sized triangle at 12 The second version of the diver (bottom photo, above) had a steel bezel with six points”. This dial had hour markers, except for the at 9 and 6 o’clock and a diamond-shape marker at 12 It was this style that through to 2005 as the classic of the series. While later would offer the 2000 as an the Heuer 2000 watch was available with a quartz

Like the 2000 the 2000 Chronograph was also with either a coloured insert bezel, or the stainless bezel design seen on the below. As you can also see from the below, the 2000 series was during the two-tone colour which is making something of a today. As I write this, I am a PVD Titanium Grand Carrera 17- with a Rose Gold looking very much it took its design from the you see below.

The movements used in the 2000 Series are actually remarkable. Many think of the as being an entry-level quartz but actually the movement has far more to it that. Both the quartz and chronographs use the Dubois Depraz chronograph module. The Automatic (LWO 283) mates the module to the ETA 2892 base, the quartz movement (Calibre uses a ESA 555.XXX (also as the ETA 955.XXX) tractor. the Dubois 2000 module was the result of a between Lemania and Dubois that began in the late Because Heuer contributed to the of the project, the LWo 283 was initially exclusive to but when Lemania sold its in Heuer in 1984 to TAG, the use of the became more widespread. sold the movement as the Lemania 283 to high-end clients such as Piguet in their Royal Oak Girard Perregaux (7000 and Baume et Mercier. The quartz was effectively a forerunner of the Calibre S combing a quartz base a mechanical chronograph module.

Other Early 2000

There were no shortage of variants of the early Heuer series. In addition to the models above, there was also a bezel model (below, top and yet another bezel variation  left) with the words 2000″ printed on the bezel. two models shared another of the Heuer 2000 dial- the lume markers being to these two models. Finally, are two special PVD versions of the Quartz Chrono featured in the 1983 catalogue. While these are supposedly part of the series, in they have little to do the rest of the range. The square is more reminiscent of the Lemania Carrera and Cortina models and the bracelet is something featured on no 2000 watch. I suspect these designs are a hang-over the early 1980s Lemania era and were thrown in with the range at the last minute- cool looking watch, but not a 2000 in my mind.
