2012 Mercedes-Benz ML Class Launched

by Marc Greig – 08/05/12

Better looks, reduced fuel consumption and extra kit Mercedes Benz’ third-generation ML Class SUV has been worth the wait.

Opening the batting at $81,400 is the Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BlueTec with 150kW/500Nm from its 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel. Fuel consumption is improved to 6.4l/100kms (under the 7.0l/100kms ceiling for luxury car tax).

Interestingly, both ML 350 BlueTec diesel and ML 350 BlueEfficiency petrol models are stickered at $99,000. The ML 350 BlueTec gains under the bonnet with its six-cylinder diesel good for 190kW/620Nm while fuel consumption is down to 7.3l/100kms.

Entry-level petrol model (ML 350 Blue Efficiency) also gains power and torque (225kW/370Nm) but the newcomer boasts a massive cut in fuel consumption down to 8.5l/100kms.

And now for the superb ML-Class V8s

Not in showrooms until June, the ML 500 adopts Benz’ new 4.7-litre V8 but gains more power and torque (300kW/600Nm) and better fuel economy (12.3l/100kms).

And the range-topping ML 63 AMG (without doubt one of the world’s best cars) scores the 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 with even more performance than the previous 6.2-litre engine 386kW/700Nm certainly gets our attention!

You could say the new styling is evolutionary but park the all-new models against their predecessors and in fact the changes are substantial. The hallmark forward-sloping C-pillar (often copied by rivals) remains, but the all-new ML-Class is more athletic and contemporary with some styling cues flowing from the Mercedes passenger car range (the new grille for starters). ML 350 models upgrade to standard 20-incha alloy wheels.

It’s a similar story inside an all-new look with even more up-market trim, but still the hallmark Mercedes-Benz ML-Class style. Most noticeable is the totally new dashboard with a 4.5-inch screen ahead of the driver, new-design steering wheels and a centre seven-inch screen for the audio/satellite navigation.

As expected there’s a raft of new safety technology and driver aides available according to model such as lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and radar collision avoidance.

ML 500 V8 scores a sunroof and variable air suspension amongst its extras while the gorgeous ML 63 AMG adopts 21-inch alloy wheels, the AMG bodykit and usual AMG leather-trimmed sports seats and ‘whole enchilada’ of trim enhancements.

Car Showroom will be testing the new Mercedes-Benz ML-Class in coming weeks so keep an eye out for our review.
