Finally A Hybrid Among Mercedes-Benz is Singing The Blues The 2010 S400 BlueHybrid

hybrids.  So, you might breakeven in costs in about ten years of driving.  By then, the battery need replacing, and to fix it, it may cost you as much as your car is worth- or Are gas-electric hybrids really looking into?  Well, still debatable, and more on a little later.   I firmly and a lot of other car guys will the gas-electric hybrid is an intermediate at best- a solution till truly superior or sustainable along.

Mention hybrid to German manufacturers, and they’d scoff at the notion.  Since the 1970’s diesel has always their first choice in friendly, economical solutions to a automotive footprint, and they’ve well with them.  BMW, and Audi/VW all offer a of efficiently powerful diesels to fit the even importing a handful of Stateside.  But things are changing.

(You didn’t think would ever pattern a after what?  A Lexus?

Mercedes-Benz is the first to unveil the hybrid that uses a ion battery.  The very same of battery found in your phone or laptop.  But isn’t the same type of battery as in the Tesla Roadster?  It is- but the Tesla is an all-electric plug-in, a glorified in comparison; hardly a mass-produced, road machine like the S-Class.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz BlueHybrid™- is the first hybrid for the manufacturer; in fact, it’s a mild hybrid with an motor kicking-in for a few seconds at mostly.  To note- even the use of the blue over green this hybrid apart…  But That’s just marketing.  It is the production car to use a lithium-ion battery, most that use nickel-hydride

Being a mild hybrid, its effect is subtle, with the twenty-horse, 118 lb-ft electric wedged between the conventional Mercedes V6 engine and the advanced automatic transmission as found in any S-Class sedan for a combined 295

The battery itself is about the of a shoebox, made by Continental.  It has 32 (made by Saft of Europe) and has the of 120 volts, 0.9 amps per hour, positioned in the engine bay- the rest of the engines and motors, of A cooling system tied to the HVAC system ensures the is kept at safe, optimal all the time, even while the car is with the aid of a dedicated electric motor.

The engineering is so unique, that to Mercedes-Benz, they’re confident the will last the lifetime of the car.  Now, if these the Mercedes-Benzes of 20 years ago, say that’s a good thirty of operating service; but well, I a battery that lasts as as the car is a good estimate for a long Whatever that is these I really don’t know

Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

The electric motor kicks-in heavy load conditions, re-starts and kicking-in at very low from a complete stop; most hybrids in the market can and will drive under electric power, a hybrid the S400 uses electric minimally- aiding in the engine to a stop and from a slow in stop-and-go city driving.  The process is silky smooth, so you have to watch the dash-mounted to know what exactly is if you really care at all.

In Mercedes-Benz fashion- the S400 is a of cutting edge technology, it comes at a price- almost But then again, this is a heavy, loaded high-performance sedan; that can still do in just over seven all while still getting an 165 miles per tank of gas over a traditional S-Class.  According to the it can get 19 city/26 highway, its some 26% efficient than the standard sedan for about the same You’re even eligible for a tax credit of about $1,200- to put towards rubber floormats, locks, plastic driving and diecast models for the kids in the boutique.

In comparing the S400 to its contemporary CDI S-Class siblings (not Stateside) the economy and footprint on the with the carbon emissions is equal.  But the Swabians are not ditching the old Otto cycle just diesel is technology they in 1936.  Don’t be shocked if a hybrid is next.

The 2010 S400 maintains, while cars are clearly not they used to be, alas, a is still a Mercedes, and one that is Like No Other Car.

those days?  I do.
