Review From our

Fed Warranty in Canada is 130,000 km miles) and 8 years.

Fed Warranty in US is miles and 8 years — I — to be confirmed.

NOTE: if cats are making a rattling and you are within the above limits WAIT — take car to MB dealer, to have the full and cat replaced under warranty. I this myself by 3-4 months!

Here is my story. hope you it useful.

My cats started noise and given that my is just over 8 years, by 3 and only 120,000 kms, the was not an option for me. I took my car to my local mechanic (contact details who inspected the 4 cats (2 on each and noticed that the 2 coming (front end) are okay, and the mid-ones (horizontal) needed since they rattled mild banging with his (careful no to damage your if still under warranty, any physical external damage void the warranty).

Local dealer quoted over for both sides, complete Online, I found that I get the full pipes and 4 cats for each side, for a DIY. My suggested universal cats part 53004 M, 2, Metallic for $250 each side, Labour included, plus The 53004 M has engine limit of which is enough considering the S500 has 2.5L on each (half of the V8, 5L engine).

I believe that the original in the W220 is actually 2.25, that my mechanic used that welded to the 2 cat and then D-clamps to the 2.25 pipe.

If you’re to weld yourself, and DIY, the can be purchased for about $60-100 Check out amazon.com, or other retailers. HottExhaust.com — Car Sound Catalytic Converters

of direct fit cats, that are expensive, compared to the weld-on which I discuss here. sells direct-fit models (driver side) and 49420 side) for almost $2000 on their website — then sell for about each at other sites:

These direct-fit systems may be a option if you need to replace one side, including all pipes and cats on the SAME side.

weld-on cat models and shapes are You need to consider the space the cats, the effect of heat of being too close, and then the clearance. In the picts below, one can see there is little space between the 53004 M model on my car.

The 91004/5 and 99004/5 models are flatter, but their may make them difficult to fit 2 of side by side in the W220 unless you try to place them at an (?). All these models heat shields, even the original mercedes cat doesn’t to have a heat shield. An model worth considering be the 59904 or 59905 model, an offset-offset design, but no apparent shield.

Whether you chose the 2 — model, or 2.25 — model depends on your and the adapters you use or not.

My mechanic cut out the old and attached two new cats with and D-clamps (NOTE: no welding on the pipes), and everything works Only negative is the look of the new with welded sleeves and which is not an issue for me. In addition, the new are not flat on the underside, and you lose 1 clearance in the center — should not be an issue if you drive car on civilized roads. In fact, the wheel axel/arms and the back end to the mufflers are also lower the rest of the underside.

Using this sort of is a great idea, instead of welding the new cats to the original since any future cat replacement require re-cutting any direct on the pipe side, which further shorten the original

Below are the pictures of before and

Additional notes.

1) When the passenger side old cat, the bracket/joint was fairly rusted, and though the mechanic used to losen it, it cracked slightly, so he up preparing a new sleeve joint about 2 overlap over the pipes, using a D clamp. On the connections which are direct with no brackets with the the mechanic used the same connections and D-clamps. This the cats to be removed in the future (if without having to cut the pipes again.

2) the front cats, up into the engine area, not changed. mechanic indicated these don’t tend to go bad
