Secondhand Saint: Mercedes-Benz S55 S65 AMG, S600 (2003-2006)

Ah, Mercedes-Benz.  Just the name up thoughts of expensive country upper-class attitudes, and feelings of in the 1%.  Their flagship the S-Class, has always been a in its market since the 1970s, and the high entry price, sells itself better the competition.  The previous-generation W220 was the one brought this fantastically flagship into the 21st and now some of the most powerful (namely, those with sort of forced induction) can be had for a of their original value.  For that shall be discussed we’re going to focus on the S55 and as the S65 is significantly harder to find today.

The S600, the top of the line, non S-Class

In 2003, the W220 had on sale for three years, and wanted to give the lineup a refresh under the hood. came in the form of new engines for the S55 AMG and The S600, the non-AMG S-Class got a big upgrade in the form of a brand-new V12 (in this case, a 5.5L pushing out a healthy 493hp, the already-established S55 became home to a new version of AMG’s already 5.5L V8, with the same of power as the S600 (although less torque).  Two years the boys at AMG gave the S-Class a new in the form of the almighty S65 AMG, flaunted a brand-new 6.0L V12, pushing out 604hp and 700 lbs-ft of torque–an engine in use in the current S65 (the current is also still using the old as well).  All of them used a automatic transmission (also in use in the V12 models of today) with shifting capabilities.

Of course, these being of the Mercedes S-Class, there’s so more than engine to three super-sedans.  All of them are of absurd speeds in utmost surrounded by the latest technological available at the time.  All three the COMAND navigation and driver regarded as being a more alternative to BMW’s iDrive, and came equipped with and stability control (although the AMG were probably still of outwitting their traction systems), a brake assist at the time), automatic trunk and closer (which were and optional keyless ignition.  quality, of course, was the top of the range, as was the build quality.  They all excellent suspension balance (a ride, yet well-behaved handling for size), and sound-deadening that shame the best recording They had prices to match, 2006, the S55 retailed for about the S600 for about 128K, and the S65 for a $170,000–before options, delivery, or the gas-guzzler taxes.  This, of

course, brings me to these drawbacks.

The 604bhp, 738ft/lbs, S65 AMG. See it can do in the video below.

If something has a tax on it, don’t expect to go cheap on With 93-octane fuel a requirement, and the fact that of these cruisers sip fuel, be to ask for a  raise.  And, these Mercedes products, parts and are very expensive as well.  if you want to drive like an expect to pay for the privilege.  The electronics are prone to failure occasionally as which means big repair too, so make sure works properly.  All that there are plenty of ways to these cars, as quite a few companies produce body for the W220 S-Class.  The engines are of producing much more than advertised–in fact, the engine had to be held to 738 lbs-ft of design limit for the transmission.

Thanks to big depreciation and high gas these examples of Mercedes-Benz’s can be had for a price the 99% can largely afford.  The S55 and sold well for the time, but the S65 did not to the significantly higher entry and shorter life cycle.  The market prices do reflect fact very clearly.  The S55 and were priced similarly new and had similar numbers, so their prices are fairly close.  this, the S55 outnumbers the S600 A good twin-turbo S600 can be had for from $15K to $35k, the vast majority going for 15-25 grand, and the S55 can be found for the same amount, if a bit more.  The meanwhile, is outnumbered significantly by the S55 and with prices on the used being significantly higher; start right where the ends (for the most around 35 large, and top out at over These prices represent a amount of depreciation, with the being anywhere from 65% to as as 80%.  If you can afford the upkeep, costs, and be able to fit one in a garage, old W220 S-Class models are a idea, and an excellent way to look the 1%.

Nicely modded S55 AMG. upgrades, this one is putting out 600hp. Goes to show the extra money for an S65 is not all that it in many regards.

But, the remains: who should buy these? If afraid of high running but love luxury, look If you’re looking for a luxury that is more at home on go for something else. These available with AWD, so if a priority, go look for an Audi S8. if you’re the type who loves a comfy, high-powered sedan the utmost in brand snobbery and of tech all in one package, these Benzes are pretty hard to

As a bonus, here’s a video of a S65 racing a Murcielago. Again, the model may look different, but the and transmission are identical to the old W220. just goes to show how these sedans really
