The SL roadster is Mercedes-Benz’s top sports but there is always room for Nearly every new Mercedes is over to in-house tuner AMG for added muscle, and the SL is no different. The carmaker just released and specifications for the new SL 63 AMG, based on the 2013 SL, ahead of its Geneva Show debut.

As with other AMG models, the engine has been downsized to lower emissions. The old naturally 6.2-liter V8 is replaced by a twin-turbocharged unit (the “63” remains out of habit). The new engine produces more horsepower versus 518) and torque lb-ft versus 465) the old one, even in “base” The optional Performance package those figures to 557 hp and 664 lb-ft.

All power is sent to the rear via a seven-speed automatic transmission paddle shifters). Instead of a converter, the transmission uses a wet pack that should it to cope with the SL63’s torque while still more responsive than a automatic. Mercedes claims a mph time of 4.2 seconds and a (limited) top of 155 mph for the base model. The Performance shaves a tenth of a second off the time and raises the top speed to 186

The SL63 AMG also benefits the 2013 SL’s weight program; the new car supposedly weighs 275 less than the old one. To this, aluminum, magnesium, fiber, and high-strength steel used throughout. Adding should improve the SL’s as will bigger wheels and (19-inch or staggered 19-inch 20-inch rear) and the Performance limited-slip differential.

In addition to the new wheels, the SL 63 AMG gets a streamlined front fascia, prominent exterior vents, and exhaust tips. It’s a toned version of the standard SL; if you don’t like that looks, AMG’s styling may not change your mind.

On the inside, the SL63 AMG is just as as the regular SL. The interior will be in leather, with endlessly seats. Like the base SL, the SL 63 AMG sports a folding metal offering coupe-like serenity the top up. Optional tech includes a Olufsen sound system, assist, blind-spot monitoring, and which blows warm air the headrests onto drivers’ and necks.

All of that luxury and performance can be had for $140,000. That’s a lot, but is an AMG Mercedes. It’s also cheaper than Ferrari’s convertible, the California. The SL63 AMG make its public debut at and will go on sale in the U.S. this year.
