Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 AT Special Series

So what’s Mercedes come up to mark the SLK’s first

The SLK Edition 10, a special version of the with some very paint. No different mechanically the existing production cars, the 10 is distinguished by 10-spoke, 17-inch finished in chrome-shadow, and dark rear lights. Most 10s will come finished in for that sinister look, silver is an option. But 350 cars be coated in allanite grey — a bizarre matt-grey It looks very strange like it left the paintshop the base coat was applied but the glossy lacquer — and with strict instructions not to put the car

through a mechanical car wash or to it. Doing either could the paint shine, ruining the effect.

What’s it like behind the

Pretty inviting, what those silver-stitched heated leather seats and the bright red markings. Like all SLKs, the 10 feels solidly made, has of cabin room, a brilliantly folding hard-top and even a sized boot, at least the roof is up. You can have an Edition 10 any of the SLK’s engines apart the V8 fitted to the AMG-fettled SLK55. In the 55’s no loss: the 268bhp 350 V6 provides plenty of shove, sixty in 5.6sec, and sounds special too.

If you want six-cylinder smoothness but so obsessed about outright there’s the 228bhp 280 (62mph in or if you aren’t bothered about at all, you could opt for the entry SLK200 version of the Edition 10. 1.8-litre supercharged four remotely sporty and sounds as exciting as an evening in front of the drier. In fact, the boom overtaking that seems to been added to inject a bit of can be a real pain. But in other this engine is a gem. only got 161bhp, but the 177lb ft of is spread right across the range where you need it. So the 8.0sec 0-62mph time is to get excited about, the real-world grunt makes it really to drive and probably also to the excellent

We drove over 1000 of mixed driving and never less than 30mpg, nearer 40mpg on a motorway It’s that kind of that defines the way the chassis too. It’s fun enough you want it to be, accurate, grippy and controlled, but not so overly dynamic it ever becomes a pain to with. The steering is less than a Boxster’s, but less too. And no sports car is more
