By 1997, the fleet of L608D minibuses operated by Red West Limited at their depot was 12 years old and showing of age. To replace these, the ordered a fleet of 64 new Mercedes-Benz Vario midibuses with Plaxton Beaver Mark II

The original specification of these called for 27 seats, but representatives the Transport and General Workers quickly argued that drivers at Worcester depot had contracted to drive vehicles a maximum of 22 seats. The union went on to ask Midland Red West to pay its an extra 15 pence an hour to the extra workload. The company to pay the extra but wanted to spread the giving minibus drivers an 3 pence an hour above normal rise each for five years. Drivers understandably not too impressed with offer and proposed a compromise whereby they would the extra 15 pence an hour over 3 years. After negotiations the managing director, Mr Ken refused this request and a last minute change to the specification. The five-seat bench was from the back row, and two of double seats moved the front offside to the back, a 22-seat layout with an large luggage rack at the of the bus.

Deliveries began in the summer of and all 64 vehicles entered into service at Worcester depot on 2 nd August 1998, coinciding the new ‘S’ registration prefix. However, as operations only required the use of five minibuses at the time, did not get their first outing the following day. The first vehicles delivered, numbers (registration numbers R501–R507CNP), saw use as training vehicles and demonstrators this date and were registered early, hence the ‘R’ registration numbers. All entered carrying a variation of the established red and bus livery, and displaying the company’s new name of First Midland although the company’s legal remained Midland Red West until 26 th March 1999.

The public had their first to ride on these new vehicles in 1998, during Worcester “Green Transport Week,” Midland Red West operated a park and ride service for the using the R-prefix vehicles. For best known to themselves, the management would not allow the staff to operate this deciding instead to operate service themselves. Rumour now has it during this time the Director of Operations, Mr Colin became the first person at Red West to crash a Vario!

In around late 1999 or 2000, it was discovered that the in the door on some of the fleet was off. An examination of the rest of the revealed a design fault in the and Plaxton fitted all 64 vehicles in the with a special bracket to the step.
