Is it time to reconsider the Smart?

The Fortwo minicar came to the US in and I think most Americans myself included — quite know what to of it. For 2011, Smart has given the a very minor makeover. The changes to the front fascia and panel are almost impossible to but the functional changes are much noticeable: Knee airbags for all side-curtain airbags for coupes, and like integrated navigation and cruise control.

Lots to

Skeptical as I was about the last I drove, I was surprised at just how I enjoyed this one. Not it was love at first site; my day of driving felt like a prison sentence. But with passing day I got used to the Smart’s and found myself looking for to drive it. By the end of my test week, I was to give it up.

What did I like about the For one thing, the Cabriolet version I is the least-expensive convertible sold in the US. For — same as a decently-equipped Civic — you get an open-top car air conditioning and an automatic transmission. The convertible roof slides like a giant sunroof goes to photo) and then into a bundle at the rear of the car it blocks half the view in the mirror). Getting the full effect requires manually the side rails. but it’s an job and they store neatly the trunk lid. One advantage to the roof rails in place is you can open and close the top at any speed something no other convertible I of can do. And because the Fortwo Cabriolet is so and so stiff, it doesn’t suffer the chassis flex that most convertibles.

More likes: The Smart’s size makes for unbelievable and I loved being able to in half-size spots — you those otherwise useless left by people who aren’t enough to pull up close to the car in Thanks to the tall driving the Smart doesn’t feel as tiny as it looks from the Acceleration from the 70 hp 3-cylinder is quicker than you might and it makes a cool growly when you rev it. The Fortwo grips the pretty well, and standard stability control ensures won’t get too far out of hand.

Lots to

That the list of downsides is pretty While the Smart is great for parking, it loses its advantage in a parking lot: It has big doors. so if you can squeeze it into a tiny you won’t be able to get out of the car. space is fine as long as short like me (5’6), but my 6’2 son clambered in, he looked an illustration in a geometry book. The automatic transmission (a fully-automated that does all the clutching and for you) makes for uneven delivery, the ride is choppy bumps, and the bottom-hinged brake is awkward to use. Fuel isn’t bad — I averaged MPG, much better the last Fortwo I tested — but the Smart requires premium fuel. The warranty, the car, is alarmingly short: 2 years or 24,000 miles, no extended powertrain coverage. And is a concern: Although the Fortwo has good crash test its 1,850-lb curb weight that even a modestly-sized car punt it like a football in a

Like most European the Smart offers lots of that you don’t even about paying extra for in a or Japanese car: Driver’s extra storage bins, metallic paint and power My test car had $1,820 worth of yet it still lacked cruise and a CD player.

Searching for an excuse

That even with an as-tested over $20k, my tester was $3,500 less than a Mazda Miata and over less than a MINI convertible. Fiat has a semi-convertible of the 500 on the way — it has a sliding roof side rails that are in place — but it starts at

The Smart Fortwo coupe is a harder to justify; at $12,240 it an automatic transmission but no A/C or stereo. The Versa and Toyota Yaris better value-for-money, though lack the Smart’s cool and park-anywhere size (although the comes close).

I can come up a dozen reasons not to buy the Smart and only one really compelling why you should: It’s a neat car, especially in convertible And to me, that’s good enough. I can of several niches into the Smart Fortwo fits Commuter car for a working family; car for frequent travelers; grocery-getter for or folks who work at home; for a motorhome. It’s simply a of finding an excuse — and if I had a excuse, I might well buy one — Aaron Gold
