First Drive: 2013 Fortwo Electric Drive

The Smart ED’s new, price tag could be its biggest point.

It’s become one of the familiar silhouettes on the road – not a good thing considering the fortwo has been around in since before the turn of the and in U.S. showrooms since That said, the maker is out an all-new version worth look: the Smart Fortwo Drive – or, if you prefer for a car this let’s just call it the ED.

is the third-generation battery car for Daimler microcar brand and the most which is probably understandable it is also the most functional and version of the ED yet. The 2013 battery car is faster, delivers rage and steers and handles than its predecessors.

But what be the most effective selling for the third-generation Smart Fortwo ED is the tag. The maker launched the model at $199 a month.  included a $119 charge for the car and another $80 a month for the new Battery Plan.  In other words, lease the battery separately the car itself. Oddly, the package came in at half the earlier price for the entire vehicle, included.  But to make the Fortwo ED more appealing, Smart is now the package price for the Coupe to $139 a month.

The 2013 Smart ED is available as a coupe and as a cabriolet — the convertible battery car, in

As for the cabriolet – and, yes, is the only maker to offer a electric vehicle – that now from $239 to $199 a

Smart is the latest maker to drop hoping to boost battery car which have been far behind proponents’ expectations. But alone likely won’t do to move the needle if the vehicles deliver better features, and performance. To see how the Fortwo ED delivered, headed to Ann Arbor, Michigan for driving time.

First, the basics: the third-generation Electric Drive is powered by electric motor which can up to 74 hp if you push it into what be called electric supercharger That’s up from 27 hp (and 40 with the previous generation. The new also deliver 96 foot of torque, which makes felt promptly while up with traffic or merging a freeway, where the older EV a bit.

A peak 74 hp might not like much but considering the size of the Smart fortwo enough to launch from 0 to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds, according to the That’s a full 1.2 seconds than the gasoline-powered Smart and it compares with an anemic 26 for the Gen-2 ED. Top speed, meanwhile is now 78 compared with the old 62 miles per – which wasn’t exactly if you needed to get on the highway.

The new ED still gets 76 miles per charge.

The all-new smart electric is rated at 122 city MPGe, or per gallon gasoline-equivalent, according to the This is a somewhat mysterious that is designed to give a a sense of how efficient the vehicle is to a conventionally-power automobile.

However, the that is more likely to to buyers is 76 – as in 76 miles per charge. And Smart was only able to out a single extra mile to the previous ED, which has to be considered of a disappointment.

Range depends, of on how aggressively you drive, where you and weather and road conditions.  The city/highway range is a bit better, and pick up some extra if you minimize jack rabbit and effectively use brake regeneration.

(In even the regen braking is far smoother and quieter than the used in the 2011 smart EV. The in the brake system enhance the environment that is the one key features and of driving an EV.)

Daimler representatives to finesse the range issue by most users will on a regular basis once the reaches 20% just as they do a cell phone.

The Fortwo is largely the same — but for gauges that show, other things, remaining charge.

Charging time on a variety of factors, including temperature. From a 240-volt it only takes 3½ hours to go 20 to 80%, and about six hours to full charge from a battery. You’ll roughly those numbers with a 120-volt outlet.

Another was Smart’s decision not to offer a 440-volt DC quick charger which could get you to 80% from a battery in just 20 minutes or “It’s something we’re in mind” for a future update there are more available Level 3 chargers, Mike the program manager, told

On the plus side, the Smart ED suffer from the insufferable gearbox found in the gasoline of the Fortwo – perhaps the single factor working against microcar.

As we mentioned, the Smart ED is available in and cabriolet body styles, maintaining what has been the footprint of any car on U.S. roads. The drive battery fits where the fuel tank goes, in the underfloor area the front and rear wheels housing the gas tank. That actually lowers the vehicle’s of gravity and modestly improves its capabilities.

The extremely short makes the Smart Fortwo nimble, particularly in urban, driving. On fast roads a fair bit more twitchy and to jouncing around on Michigan’s roads.

But the overall shift in distribution, along with the power, make the Smart ED more stable and easier to and, I thought, more fun to

Electric vehicles, in general, for everyone. And the Smart Fortwo, with a gas motor, is not for the mainstream. when you combine an electric and the Fortwo you get what is an arguably package. Now factor in the minimal tag and you just might find to give the Smart Fortwo ED a drive.
