OVERVIEW

Originally designed to Europe’s growing traffic and tight streets, smart is not tailor-made for a wide brown like Australia. Sales, have been understandably since it first launched in 2003. With just 12 Australia-wide, 10 of those on the eastern smart is not exactly aimed at domination.

The smart brand on the back of a two-seat compact runabout originally called but renamed ‘fortwo’ in 2004 to way for a four-door, four seater on. Second on the road is the Roadster, an minimalist sports car with low weight, turbocharged engine and levels of enjoyment.

October greets the third, and arguably attractive model of the smart — the forfour. As its name there’s seating for four in its hatchback body, though external dimensions (it’s 3.7m long, 1.7m and 1.45m high) are in keeping the city-car mantra.

A fourth will follow, but not until at the earliest. Called the formore, essentially a forfour with a pronounced boot, high suspension and all-wheel drive. forfour for offroad. Very duty offroad.

FEATURES

The forfour is the result of a partnership DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi, which delivered the Colt. It’s a practical, less confronting than the previous two smarts and has the to increase the brand’s awareness and in Australia.

The front-wheel drive forfour smart’s two-tone body-style and with 10 external colours and highlight choices, there’s 30 combinations to choose from. We it’s the best looking in the range, and will appeal to who want something different the typical four-door hatchback.

The price at launch in October starts from $23,990 a Mitsubishi-supplied 1.3-litre (70kW), engine and five-speed manual Another $2000 will get you the 1.5-litre model, and a six-speed automatic is a $1035 option on model.

Australian specification reflected the European ‘Pulse’ level, but with a few extras in. All models come standard electric front windows, central locking, air-conditioning, CD and alloy wheels. The 1.5-litre adds multi-function steering trip computer and of course, the engine.

COMFORT

Remember the smart, too, has a surprisingly interior given its tight packaging. There’s ample for two adults in the front, and there’s leg and headroom to fit two adults in the rear getting in and out of the rear presents no

The driver’s seat adjusts and aft, and for backrest rake, but the is fixed and feels too high (a seat with height is an extra-cost option). The steering tilt adjustment can take a of the sting out, however, for a reasonable compromise overall. The has a useful amount of oddments including door pockets, a box and a cupholder under the stereo

The boot, such as it is, fits an bag, or maybe four of shopping if you’re a light The second row of seats can slide up to 150mm to free up room in the cramped boot at the expense of legroom. It can also be folded for bigger loads. A space spare tyre hides the boot floor.

SAFETY

makes plenty of noise smart’s ‘tridion’ safety which is essentially a clever for the body structure. smart comply to European and Australian requirements, and has lap-sash seatbelts in all spots, and at least four (front driver and passenger, and driver and passenger). Curtain are optional.

smart’s active features put it ahead of similarly-priced from other European It comes with and electronic program which controls the to regulate slip and reduce the of losing control. Four disc brakes are standard, as is ABS brake system) with EBD brakeforce distribution).

MECHANICAL

The sits on an incredibly long which almost leaves the axle behind the car! wide footprint endows the with the on-road dynamism and of a much bigger car. It on 15-inch alloy wheels and two specification 15-inch tyres depending on the engine you choose.

All models have the choice of a manual transmissions or an optional automatic with a sequential mode. Slide the lever to access manual mode and you tap forward to change up, backwards to down.

Both the 1.3-litre and four-cylinder engines are the product of Motors. The former produces of power and just 125Nm of which is sufficient to propel the forfour from rest to in a claimed 10.8 seconds.

The 1.5-litre engine boosts power to 80kW and torque to and knocks a full second off times. Fuel consumption for engine is a claimed 6.1 litres/100km. models have a 47 litre tank and smart recommends unleaded.

COMPETITORS

Four-door flexibility opens smart up to a new world of shoppers: Those at the VW Golf, Renault Megane, 307, Holden Astra or Focus could be tempted by striking looks.

If you’re on room, then smart up pretty well with its four-… capability. Performance? The makes good use of a modestly-powered and lightweight chassis to deliver on-road performance and fantastic economy.

Features? OK, smart’s heritage means it isn’t loaded with goodies for the — the wing mirrors are adjust for example — but got the basics in place, and has a safety few can match for the price.

ON THE ROAD

It’s fair to say the forfour surprised us on test. an enjoyable car to drive and exacts performance from both though the 1.5-litre’s extra zip it more appeal. We’ve the steering on smart cars and the forfour exhibits the same feel we experienced in the Roadster.

The gearbox is the pick of the two transmissions, but when you shift it yourself. If to its own devices the gearbox seems in too of a hurry to reach fourth or Every gearchange is accompanied by a loss of power which any smoothness the acceleration may have

smart’s on-road dynamics are impressive, and it doesn’t mind a as long as you forgive the lifeless It delivers good grip in and plenty of squirt on exit, but very little chance of traction under power you provoke it shamelessly.

It’s under brakes, also, and a level of responsiveness and poise what we expected. Rough however, can play havoc smart’s short suspension and you could be bucking and bouncing all the place. On smooth roads the is typically European smooth, but European Continental tyres up plenty of noise from Aussie roads.

Plenty of space city-friendly dimensions, economical and it is easy to be green! We drove the forfour for a week and were with its sprightly performance and albeit at the cost of premium

Official consumption figures are for the 1.3 with ‘softouch plus': an six-speed transmission with program, available as an option for It features a ‘crawl function’ for driving and gearchange assistance, allows for up to three downshifts at The softouch plus works in ‘manual’ mode and with a bit of This reveals the forfour’s fun which is supported by the responsive and agile handling.

With stability control, wide width and amenable steering the feels surefooted and more than its baby car look Rated at 70kW and weighing than 1000kg, the forfour has a ration of 12.2kg per kW: the same as roadster model.

Brabus up on the forfour’s potential with a version but it’s more green points. High scored in the Australian Green Guide rating this attest the eco-friendliness of the forfour and and the smart brand implements ‘Ecology Management’ scheme, the use of software tools designed to the use of recycled and raw materials in production and to the re-use of parts at the end of a vehicle’s

There’s evidence of this the forfour’s interior, from the material covering the dashboard to the instrumentation and shapeless but solid and door handles. No frills, but it’s an attempt to help the planet, tolerable.

Now that official development of the formore is no the forfour is the only four-seater in range. That’s ok, because days with the forfour smart’s original theory: drivers rarely have than one passenger, so build cars. For test purposes we for a Sunday drive with two and pleasantly-surprised adults in the back, use of the sliding rear seat for legroom.

The forfour is a slightly-sporty among the $20K class, you’ll be paying more of its aristocratic ancestry. Considering the standard-fit list with features such as ESP and ABD, worth snobbing the hoi polloi.
