Smart ForTwo Electric Car Review

As an alternative to a Flux / Fusion fueled Delorean, drive or EV vehicles make a lot of to me. Despite being an EV fanboy recent buyer of a vintage golf cart), most of my was based on theory rather hands-on-the-wheel / foot-on-the-pedal experience. The of experience with EV has more to do a severely underrepresented Electric market here in the US, rather a lack of interest. For more on topic, be sure to check out Who the Electric Car (where you can also out about the very cool new Revenge of the Electric Car ). After of the US EV fleet was sent off to the crusher, just haven’t been a lot of Vehicle options to choose That’s about to change, and the ForTwo Electric Drive is one of the 100% electric vehicles to hit the US I’ve had the chance to drive a ForTwo Electric Drive on occasions now. Is it viable? Is it a Tesla? Should you buy (lease) Read on for my detailed review.

most golf carts, the ForTwo Electric offers you of the typical features you find in gas-guzzling, smog-spewing counterparts. Air and heater come standard. But those use a ton of energy? According to “This depends on the use of the heating and air and the outside temperature. However, the electronics regulate the heating and air so as to minimize the strain on the battery.” I that to mean if you’re a Smart ForTwo Electric in Phoenix in August or Duluth in you’re totally screwed. For urban/suburban hops, the Smart should keep you comfy immediately depleting the battery. I run the heater and the AC at various times and them both functional, but not a blast of super-heated or frosty I couldn’t perceive a huge in battery depletion with on, but they obviously take toll on battery life. The drive also comes power steering, so you won’t to arm-wrestle your car into parallel parking spot. The ForTwo I drove was equipped a touchscreen center console provided navigation and music. I the touchscreen distractingly bright for driving, but it’s otherwise and handy.

The Smart ForTwo electric has a clean, albeit utilitarian The vent dials felt a clunky to me, and the dial for directing air is a bit to decipher with its 360 degrees of The e-brake is in its typical location, but a little cheap in construction. My gripe with the interior is the rear view mirror. the mirror isn’t giant, I it took up a good chunk of my real estate. Depending on incline/decline, and your own height, you may the mirror in your way.

Style

By now, I think of us anywhere urban are pretty to seeing Smart cars around. Some people them, others hate The Electric Drive Smart models that I drove all contemporary styling and a techie, San blue and white paint The only real eye-catching components were the wheels on particular models. I don’t eye-catching in a good way either. The look like something find on a trailer or possibly a lawn tractor. I suspect the choice was a budget and practicality for San Diego’s rental fleet. from the ugly wheels, the Electric Drive has clean and a nice, understated style.

My Driving Impressions

With a MPH electronically limited top speed, you can say to speeding tickets on the freeway.

The torque of the E-motor is immediately which provides for strong acceleration. The smart fortwo drive has no gearshift and accelerates to 60 in 6.5 seconds.

Notice that’s 60 Kilometers per (not miles per hour). just say you won’t be winning any and Furious street races in the Car. Despite acceleration doesn’t exactly press you your seat, the Smart car is fun to drive around urban It’s nimble, turns on a and seems to have plenty of given its speed limitations. If you are to drift around corners a cloud of tire smoke you, immediately stop this and go check out Tesla’s The electric drive’s ride is firm, and with the short base, speed bumps and taken at speed may require a visit.

The smart fortwo drive can be charged on a 110v or outlet. It takes just 3.5 on a 220v outlet to charge 20% to 80% of capacity.* For those who will the vehicle more aggressively, are home charging solutions through SPX. Details can be at www.homecharging.spx.com/smart/. (*Will vary on outside temperature).

It’s not an SUV but the fortwo can handle groceries

Are you most American’s who like to giant screen TV’s, improvement supplies and possibly children around? If so, the Smart isn’t for you. The storage of this vehicle is understandably to not much beyond a few bags of The hatchback has a fold down which makes loading and a very simple task. everything is so compact, you also find yourself straining and awkwardly. In a Smart car, about everything is within reach.

From the Smart

Q: Electric vehicles barely any noise. Does this a danger for other road if the vehicle isn’t heard as it

A: Unlike vehicles with engines, electric vehicles produce any driving/motor noise. this may make it less to be heard, every road has an obligation to adopt a suitable style to ensure that road users are not put at risk. includes full visual of other vehicles. In addition, any other car, the smart drive can brake and evade situations.

I love the “like any other the smart electric drive can and evade. ” line. That’s for of you that might have under the impression that cars lacked brakes or a wheel. The Smart ForTwo has an exterior that is identical to a Smart ForTwo. So, if you do get in a little bender, presumably replacement panels and exterior trim be more available than if was unique to the electric version.

ForTwo Electric Drive

The smart fortwo electric vehicles utilize a 30 kW drive that is completely powered by a kWh lithium-ion battery. Using a 220V outlet, it takes three and a half hours to the battery from 20 to 80 percent of its and less than eight to fully charge it. The battery may be charged using a common 110V outlet.

Much the “MPG” fuel economy of an electric vehicle’s range on a charged battery depends on patterns and environmental conditions. The fortwo electric drive is for city use. In an urban at warm temperatures, the smart electric drive can achieve up to 98 on a full charge according to the EPA LA4 test cycle. In combined and highway driving, the U.S. EPA the range on the smart fortwo drive to be 63 miles.

The battery system constantly monitors electricity and temperature to reduce of battery overload. The battery automatically powers down to a 10 kW below a 5 percent state of and at extremely high temperatures.

Thanks to the power characteristic of the motor, the smart fortwo drive only needs a fixed gear ratio. The motor’s direction of rotation to drive in reverse.

The average spot provides room for 2 or 3 cars

This is one area the Smart ForTwo (gas or really shines. You know awkward moment when you ahead of an open spot and you a line of stressed-out, urban behind you, all of them attention to everything but their Despite signaling well in half the time you can’t back into your because one of them has snuggled up to your rear bumper. I an open spot in a busy of San Diego and rather than in, I pulled right into the moving forward (something I’d never attempt with a size car). The car is insanely to park. Once I pulled the spot, it was so roomy I felt I could have parked Smart cars there. with the Smart car is about as as it gets.

If the promo video is any indicator, I’m pretty sure is marketing to young and very buyers. Rural, nursing-home need not apply. If you know Twitter is and spend almost all of driving time within a 15 mile radius, then you be a good candidate for the Smart Electric Drive. More see if this video speaks to

Smart ForTwo Electric Availability Pricing

According to website, their Electric Vehicles, “Are available for now. You may contact your smart center for more Smart’s current conventionally-fueled models are available for lease around $999 down and from $99 to $199/month on a three lease. To get in touch with nearest Smart dealer, try the Dealer Locator. I contacted our dealer here in San Diego and out some very interesting on both the current Smart Electric Drive models and a to be released “Generation 3″ model. to the person I spoke with, 250 of the current Smart electric vehicles were made to the public here in San Diego, and all 250 leased already. However, a model that will be for outright purchase is tentatively set to in about seven months roughly November/December of 2012). I asked about the model I was told it will still be a ForTwo Electric Drive, as a “Generation Three.”

Smart ForTwo Electric Generation Three Coming

The Smart rep I talked with me that San Diego’s Car2Go paid $46,000 per vehicle for the generation cars and that the new 3″ version would sell for less” than that. a soon to be available Tesla S Sedan (which will do in under six, seats adults plus two kids and have a range of 160-300 starts at $49,900, I have to say the reportedly paid by Car2Go like a complete insanity. My for Smart’s sake is that the new Three sells for a whole lot than $46,000, otherwise can expect to be spanked by just every other pure car coming on the market. The smart rep have any concrete stats for me to on the new Generation Three, but he said the new would have a 80 MPH top speed and a range. While the longer would be a very welcome I’m not sure I’d feel entirely at 80 MPH in a Smart car. A little top speed would be handy for rare occasions where you need to pass someone

The Smart ForTwo Electric is the nicest, safest, fastest, sportiest, most stylish, best-handling, easiest to park cart I have ever OK, so it’s not technically a golf Would I pay $46,000 for one? No In fact, I wouldn’t buy one at all given current limitations (particularly space/seating and range). To me, the Smart Electric Drive in it’s form is a solid step a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle like the Gem car, but is still a far cry for a gas replacement for most people. if you’re a city dweller a very short commute and you a second car or rarely/never need to more than 20 or 30 miles the Smart ForTwo Electric is worth considering, especially if the Generation Three addresses a few Or, if you’re in a place like San with a Car2Go service, you find the service a great if you just need a convenient for occasional short trips. be posting a detailed review on San Car2Go service soon as While the revenge of the electric car is (on DVD and in real life), it’s a little ways off when it to a healthy market of options will actually consider their gas vehicles with. But the car marketplace is changing rapidly, and big players are betting fortunes on its
