Smart fortwo Electric is an EV that sends mixed

Weekly column. By Nikki

Forgive me for saying so, but smart are a little bit like Marmite: you either love them to or you can’t stand them. we once owned a silver fortwo cdi with black panels, I’ve got to come on the pro smart car side. At least, it comes to nipping around

Since I’m also an EV advocate, be forgiven for thinking I’d view the smart fortwo ED as an instant But after a week behind the I’ve now got very mixed about the first-ever production smart. Yes, it’s and the best smart car I’ve driven- but there’s just there which doesn’t add up, at for me.

At first sight

Appearances The smart fortwo Electric looks like any other fortwo from a distance, but is a tad taller, wider, and longer its petrol and diesel counterparts. smart car aficionados say they can the difference, but after parking the ED next to a petrol smart and both a long, hard I’m happy to call them much identical.

Step up in to the smart interior, and there’s of legroom for both driver and The seats are slightly offset, the chances of banging elbows your passenger. Unless the physique of a Russian ballerina the occasional arm knock- especially if a corner a little too fast- is par for the

And yes, I did say “up.” Despite tiny in proportions, the smart ED stores its 17.6 kilowatt-hour battery pack under the making the ride height and position nearer to that of people-carriers than a small runabout.

Behind the wheel

That seating position though- with excellent visibility all makes the smart fortwo ED a joy town. With 130 newton-meters of sent to the rear wheels the smart fortwo ED’s 35 (55 kilowatt peak) motor, the car weaves in and out of traffic with the of a motorcycle courier. Unlike and diesel smarts- which can feel a little top-heavy roundabout-the smart fortwo large battery pack it a lower centre of gravity, you to zip around corners far faster you would with smart’s three-cylinder engine behind seat.

Out of town though, go a little downhill. While from 0-62mph takes in 11.5 seconds and the smart ED goes on to an electronically-limited top speed of 78 it isn’t all that refined at speeds.

To start with, there’s a bit of wind and road noise, due to the fortwo ED’s large end and boxy shape. But that shape also causes problems, making the smart ED feel twitchy and prone to at high speed. While is the same kind of problem by diesel and petrol smart models and doesn’t prohibit you taking it on the motorway, it does the smart fortwo ED better to life in a big city.

my week with the smart ED, I spent a fair amount of trying to get to know its onboard system, charge timer, and functions. While the smart ED does come with that let you pre-heat and pre-cool the set charge timers and check on the state of charge, a lack of and password on my press loaner car I wasn’t able to check feature out.

What I can tell you however, is the charge timer- set using the stalk on the steering wheel, a little time to get used to. In a way, I found the on-board navigation system far from to use, despite its touch-screen

At £12,275 on the road government grants and with a £55 per battery rental, the smart ED comes as standard with a 3.3 kilowatt on-board charger. of refilling its battery in anywhere 6 to 8 hours depending on the type of station you use, it’s a car you can’t take on long-distance

Shell out an extra £2,650, and the fortwo gets a 22 kilowatt charger, capable of recharging the pack to full in around an from a compatible 22 kW three-phase 2 charging station.

Opt to buy car + battery outright, and you’re looking at a in excess of £18,000 for the 22 kW-capable or nearly £19,000 for the 22kW-capable And that’s after the plug-in car of £3,993.34 has been applied.

or hate?

Overall, the smart ED is a fun car around town. Nippy, to drive, and simple to charge at a Type 2 charging station, it the bill for anyone wanting a commuter vehicle. But unless a smart fortwo fan, it on longer-distance trips could testing, even if you’re to shell out an extra £2,650 for 22 kW charger.

Yes, it’s fun. But I can’t get my head around why want to pay nearly as much as a Zoe or Nissan LEAF for much of a car.
