The Smart Car Would Be Better As A Buggy

The Mercedes-created Smart, for all its charm, isn’t a great car and it horribly. I think I have a to both problems: turn it a dune buggy.

I remember as a even in my relatively boring North Carolina neighborhood, was always a neighbor or two turning an old VW chassis into a kit car of some most often a dune Maybe some were Meyers Manx kits, but I most were likely It didn’t really matter, they were fun. I timorously walking up driveways to see was going on, irresistibly drawn to the wheeled-flying-carpet look of a bare VW pan and the fiberglass body nearby. I seen that scene in many years.

It’s not like I lived in special neighborhood of mechanical It was just a regular mid-size residential, middle-class neighborhood, and same thing was going on all the country. The kits were easy to work with, and VW Beetles that had used up first lives as somebody’s car were common. And that’s the of the problem we have now: no good donor cars for buggies anymore. The simple and original Beetle chassis are no so plentiful, but I have an idea for a replacement: Smart cars.

Look, hear me out. I it seems an unlikely candidate, but the actually has a number of traits could make it a workable to the old VW-based dune buggies. I think the Smart will end up the competitive legacy of VW-based and sand rails, but for a fun, toy, it’ll be great. thinking long-term here–-this is a way to older used Smart

Here’s why I think it’ll

• Rear engine. Traditionally, is the way to build a dune buggy. all dune buggies, whether VW-based or not, use a rear drive layout. It works. The 80 HP three in the Smart should be than adequate for some dune hooning.

• Integrated roll cage. surprisingly good safety come from what call a tridion safety (named after Trideous, the god of not dying in a tiny can) is essentially a stiff roll that forms the main of the car. This should for a pretty good dune body.

• I think used will be cheap. Now, I the idea of Smart cars, and I they’re a decent design to many urban driving but, let’s face it, not perfect. The semi-auto transmission is agreed to be crude and jerky, and the price and gas mileage just quite good enough to many people choose one larger rivals, like the Fit. Bad news for Smart, but news for us possible buggy-builders, as I in a decade or so they’re going to be on Craigslist really cheap. I they’re built and engineered enough to last, I just think many people want them. Which is what I want.

• Body panels pop right off . The non-structural, plastic body will make very replacement for more dune panels with cutaway and doors, expanded wheel etc.

• I’m not the only loon who this way. Smart have danced around the of a rugged, fun Smart. and there’s companies out there making kits and beefier suspension and all that good stuff. I can see a clapped-out Smart to fun dune kit from some company this.

So, my hypothetical Smart Buggy kit that I’ll be in 2025 and building on a $700 Smart ForTwo will something like this:

with me on this? If you think is a solid idea, meet me in on June 2, 2026. It’s my after all; Let’s with a Smart Dune desert race. If my knowledge of the is accurate, I’ll be the guy in a silver with a jetpack, eating a
