By Matt DeLorenzo July 6, 2005 When Mercedes-Benz introduced its M-Class eight years ago, it sought to offer the all-terrain capability of a truck-based SUV with the people-hauling flexibility of a minivan. It found, over time, that these two markets are quite distinct, and for its second go-around, the company decided to build two vehicles. One is specifically aimed at the SUV market, the M-Class, while the other is a new concept aimed at the upscale minivan/tall station wagon market. The R-Class is to a minivan what a corporate jet is to a turbo-prop commuter plane. Long, relatively low, and powered by a choice of a 268-bhp 3.5-liter V-6 or a 305-bhp 5.0-liter V-8, the R-Class delivers that ...

Drive MercedesBenz R500 Review

Make an enquiry Split personality For an exercise in semantics, consider Mercedes-Benz’s new R-Class. It looks like a people-mover and is designed to tote around more than your average share of occupants — in this case, six. Yet it’s not a people-mover. Benz calls it a Grand Sports Tourer. This is probably because the sheen of mediocrity afforded by the people-mover tag didn’t sit well with the model’s positioning in the market — the base R320 CDi costs $82,900, and you can fork out as much as $122,900 for the range-topping R500L. But after spending a couple of weeks in various Rs, I reckon Benz is spot on. But if you bought one for the practical benefits ...

About This Vehicle The 2007 Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a roomy vehicle and an unusual, luxurious alternative to either a minivan or sport utility vehicle. Overall, it’s one of the best vehicles for transporting a large number of people (up to six) in comfort. The new R63 AMG is a new kind of performance vehicle, and the new R320 CDI, with its turbo-diesel engine, promises to be as efficient as a minivan at the pump. Model overview: With a more streamlined profile than most sport utility vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz 2007 R-Class combines some of the attributes of a minivan and tall wagon, with a roomy, luxurious interior that has seating for six. It still retains some of the rugged running ...

MercedesBenz R500 Road Test Car Reviews Car and Driver

Mercedes-Benz R500 A slick way to avoid me-tooing the usual luxo choices. Just because this loaf-shaped five-door defies easy pigeonholing in the car world circa 2006 -Zat a minivan or an SUV overcrosser?- doesn’t mean it’ll be a tweener forever. Could this be the passenger-car shape of 2016? Loafing along would be a new pleasure. Yeah, we like the R500, and the womenfolk we hang out with don’t mind wearing it, either, never mind the similarity of its loaf shape to that of a minivan. Which just goes to prove once again that silhouette isn’t everything when it comes to cars. Having all the loaf’s space available all the time for people, or stuff, or your combination ...

Mercedes Benz R500 review

Mercedes Benz R500 Mercedes-Benz Reviews Is there an SUV in your future? If so, you may want to consider the Mercedes-Benz R500. The R500, similar in shape to its smaller cousins the R350 and the R320, has many of the same features but has some flair and bite of its own. The Mercedes-Benz R500, unlike the others, comes with a massive 6.2 litre 365 kW engine that boasts dual-overhead-camshafts and is a 24 valve dual multipoint V-8. With this amount of grunt attached to a sublime 7-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission that adapts to the driver, the R500 is no slouch. The 0-100 km/h time of 6.6 seconds vouches for this. Amazingly, the big Mercedes Benz R500 weighs in at 2.3 ...

MercedesBenz R500 All in One | AboutThatCar com

Mercedes-Benz R500 All in One by Roger Witherspoon TEANECK, NJ, — What do you do if you need a comfortable, six-passenger vehicle but don’t like the ponderous feel of a minivan or the bulky look of an SUV, and yearn for the comfort and drivability of a luxury sedan? You could come close with the extremely popular Chrysler Pacifica, but there is no getting away from its boxy, station wagon shape and handling. The crossovers like the Infiniti FX provide the handling of a sedan, but not the roominess of a six passenger vehicle. You could get three rows of comfortable seats in a Cadillac Escalade, but then you are back to the ultimate, truck-body SUV. Or you could drive the Mercedes R-500. ...

New and Used MercedesBenz R Class Prices Photos Reviews Specs…

Model Years and Variations: The Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a large crossover vehicle, offering three rows of seating capable of accommodating up to seven. Top rivals include the Audi Q7 and Lincoln MKT—also possibly the boxier, more trucklike Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes-Benz’s own GL-Class. Part station wagon, part crossover utility vehicle, and part minivan (although Mercedes-Benz has never wanted to see it this way), the R-Class covers a lot of ground in appealing to large families. In reality, its layout is closer to that of an especially roomy minivan than anything else, just with rear hinged doors instead of sliding ones. With its swoopy shape and curvier profile than most people-movers—at ...
