This Bonhams sale, at Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12, 2013, set a record for a car at auction. Fangio’s Mercedes-Benz W196 The drive of a lifetime! It was late summer of 1961 and I had been invited by Mercedes Benz to come to their Stuttgart factory to sample a new automatic transmission. However,  little did I know that a wonderful surprise awaited. Along with several other automotive writers, including my friend Karl Ludvigsen, we were taken to the factory test track in Unterturkheim to have a close look at the legendary 2.5 liter Grand Prix car, the legendary W196.
